Flushing large-diameter transmission water mains is a critical yet complex step in maintaining water quality. This session will highlight how InfoWater Pro was used to plan the flushing of more than six miles of 36-inch pipe by modeling hydraulic conditions, reversing flow direction, and optimizing valve and tank operations. You’ll learn about modeling guided decision making to increase flow rates for scouring while avoiding disruptions to customer service. Through a focused case study, this session will illustrate how to integrate hydraulic modeling and operational strategy to support effective large-main flushing.

Thames Water and Stantec in the United Kingdom have developed an innovative methodology to build a long-term investment plan for London’s clean-water network, serving 8 million customers. This work defines how the future London water network should look like using hydraulic modeling and an optimization framework to identify the best value investment options. It handled extensive data from various sources. A strategic network model (InfoWorks WS Pro software) was prepared, incorporating current and future (25 years) supply-and-demand scenarios to identify needs. Optimatics Optimizer tested numerous solution combinations, calculating cost and hydraulic performance to develop the best value plan. This optimization process required the combined effort of Optimizer processing power, hydraulic modeler input, and stakeholder engagement to select and refine investment plans of interest. The session will provide an overview of the approach we took, and present the results and lessons from the above project.

French engineering firm Artelia faced a challenge in generating secondary supports assembly drawings from AutoCAD Plant 3D software. The default AutoCAD Plant 3D settings were time consuming, and the competitor's solution was costly. Autodesk Consulting developed a new AutoCAD Plant 3D plug-in, leading to a 75% time reduction across Artelia projects, potentially saving approximately 208 days in the first year alone. The plug-in offers a variety of features. It automatically generates orientations and position views in a drawing, which streamlines the design process. It includes auto-annotation of views, making documentation more efficient. The addition of a bill of materials (BOM) and a new graphical user interface further improves user friendliness and functionality. The solution currently works with secondary supports and is beneficial for all AutoCAD Plant 3D users who use orthographic drawings. It can potentially be scaled up to include support for all objects and drawings, and for drawings with auto-dimensioning capabilities.

There is increased focus on how Digital will disrupt the E&C sector. Most executives now understand that soon, engineers will not design, they will develop the algorithms that automate the design of solutions. According to the 2023 Deltek Clarity survey, ¾ of E&C participants worry that they will lose market share within 2 years if they fail to transform. Also, CAPEX is increasing in most sectors, therefore successful transformation is not only seen as a necessary mean to remain profitable, but also to increase capacity and gain market share.
