How does Building Information Modeling (BIM) help architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms extend the services they provide to their clients? This class will look at how Jacobs used BIM on the £350M+ London Blackfriars station project that spans the Thames River in Central London. You will learn about the innovative additional services that they were able to provide to their client Network Rail, constructor Balfour Beatty, and stakeholders and see examples of services that are simply impossible with traditional 2D workflows. The class aims to show how your firm can extend the range of services that it can provide to clients by using BIM. The class will also look at how BIM was used to keep an overground station open with trains passing through during its construction period (nine phases of interim stations) while the London Underground district and circle lines continued to operate under the site. The class will demonstrate how real-time BIM viewing, using Autodesk® Navisworks® software, and planning brought benefits to many stakeholders who had never worked on a BIM-enabled project before.

Everything you need to know about BIM and firestop within a large project. How to design, coordinate and maintain firestop locations. This case study will showcase Hilti’s BIM Services at the PennFIRST Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. We partnered with the customer to improve their workflows and allow the installation process to match the BIM model. Before this, the customer had no way of tracking the product usage and productivity until the end of the project. With such a large IPD project, the customer wanted a new approach to their processes. We have provided services that include modeling the firestop locations based on the UL System matrix, uploading the model to BIM360 Glue, annotating the locations by floor and producing shop drawings. Attendees will gain the knowledge of a growing standard of care in the construction industry.

Revit software’s External Services framework enables developers to tailor the behavior of built-in Revit software features to the level that was not possible with conventional external command-based add-ins. External Services have been used as a base to support customized MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) calculations, access externally stored data, replace built-in export/import filters, and many other features in Revit software. As Revit software continues to grow there are new external services introduced with every major release, which gives developers new opportunities to provide their solutions on top of the Revit core functionality. Unfortunately, this feature has not been well adapted by the external public yet, quite possibly due to the lack of comprehensive documentation—which is exactly the gap this class will attempt to fill. We’ll explain the framework’s main ideas and clearly illustrate the most anticipated uses. We will also present a hands-on coding approach as an example of a simple MEP friction calculator.

The fast-growing network around unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as well as the availability of cloud-based processing and analysis services, enables the emergence of a category of new workflows that disrupt the conventional surveying methods. By flying a UAV around a house or a building to capture aerial images, and by processing such images to produce meaningful 2D orthographic views and 3D data using Autodesk, Inc., photo-to-3D service, we have developed a complete solution that delivers the necessary reports in a fraction of the time and cost usually necessary to get such reports. Insurance adjusters are now being offered a completely new, automated solution that avoids using ladders to climb on roofs to measure or visually inspect them following a claim. This class will focus on how 3D laser scanning was implemented into everyday use in a six-person civil engineering office with the Leica® C10, Leica® Cyclone, Leica® CloudWorx, and AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software. We will explore the changes in workflows that were required due to the implementation as well as the benefits and challenges. Grady Consulting is a small civil engineering company based in New England with special expertise in designing septic systems, including septic modifications and repairs, mostly for residential clients. In 2010, we added a Leica® ScanStation C10 and Leica® HDS software to our toolkit, plugging these tools directly into our septic system engineering process. This presentation will describe our field and office workflows and the benefits of using laser scanning for these everyday projects. In addition, we will describe the activities to expand the company’s services to new applications and new clients as a result of adding this scanning capability as part of the company’s service offerings.

This class presents several custom families that incorporate structural engineering within the families themselves. By integrating engineering into custom families, a structural engineer can capitalize on more features of Revit Structure to aid in the engineering design process. The families demonstrate several tools within the Family Editor, including nesting, formulas, conditional statements, reporting parameters, and visibility settings.
