This class discusses the results of an Advanced Infrastructure Analysis Technology assessment recently conducted by Autodesk Consulting for a major electric and gas utility that has over 15 million customers. A key focus of the engagement was the evaluation of emerging mobile and visualization technologies of potential benefit to the client's gas transmission and distribution network operations for both the short-term and long-term replacement of current mobile solutions. In this class, we demonstrate a number of Autodesk products, including InfraWorks civil infrastructure design software, ReCap™ reality capture software, and Autodesk® PLM 360 cloud-based product lifecycle management software. We highlight current advances in emerging technologies, including reality capture and augmented reality. We discuss the business requirements that were identified, the current limitations and advantages of each solution, and the final short-term and long-term recommendations that were presented.

This class will consist of a live demonstration showing how to create a "world" out of your site design that can be navigated utilizing an Xbox One controller and a virtual reality headset. Specifically, this class will discuss workflow issues the presenter encountered when constructing a one-square-mile simulation of the urban core of Austin, Texas, utilizing only LIDAR (light detection and ranging) and planimetric data.

This case study demonstrates the benefit of implementing a small 2D domain within an existing 1D InfoWorks ICM model to optimize the size and location of a planned storage facility and reduce overland flooding in a dense suburban neighborhood in the City of Toronto. Recent flooding imagery captured in 2018 and 2020 showed significant flooding in Woodborough Park and visible damage to facilities. The project team planned and designed drainage and storage mitigations by building a small-scale 2D surface model of the park and surrounding catchment area (39 hectares) within the larger 1D InfoWorks ICM model being used to plan and design the Fairbank Storm Trunk Sewer System Project. This approach enabled the designers to optimize the size of the storage facility and realize a 35% reduction in construction costs. We’ll present the approach used to develop the model, and there will be a discussion on what considerations should be given before adopting this approach to ensure the maximum benefit to the project.

Resilient infrastructure demands smarter design—especially as flood risks rise and environmental targets tighten. In this industry talk, we’ll explore how evolving regulatory and environmental challenges in the United Kingdom have shaped the way we approach surface water management on major infrastructure programs. In the past—while working with large, complex sites and multiple data-rich models—we’ve faced limitations in relation to integration, scale, and design flexibility. By transitioning to new approaches and tools such as InfoDrainage software, we’ve unlocked new efficiencies in design workflows, enabled spatial coordination, and better supported the delivery of sustainable, resilient systems. With case studies from recent UK projects, we’ll also touch on the integration of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and green infrastructure to meet climate goals and protect the environment. You’ll gain practical strategies for implementing more-intelligent, future-ready drainage designs—and you’ll get a few fresh perspectives along the way!

There are certain design issues that seem to happen to all users at some point. Many of these happen regularly, and are caused by user error, incorrect choices or oversight. These issues usually have telltale signs that a user can recognize and quickly fix if they are familiar with the symptoms. Also, some of these issues can be avoided if users know what things are easily missed or incorrectly created.

Under a consent decree since 2002 that was modified in 2017 (MCD), the City of Baltimore’s Department of Public Works (DPW) manages the operation and maintenance (O&M) and capital improvement (CIP) activities required by the MCD, in addition to a broader mission to implement sound asset management principles across the organization. This presentation will feature a deep dive into the evolution of DPW’s sewer data management and asset management programs—facilitated in part by the implementation of InfoAsset Manager, which led to the optimization of their O&M and CIP plans. You’ll learn the processes within the software and strategies employed to select assets for condition assessment; import; manage and evaluate the inspection data; develop O&M programs for cyclical cleaning, root, and grease control; and develop CIP projects using condition assessment data. We’ll also describe the multiple savings to DPW following the software implementation over the past five years.

The groundwater infiltration model (GIM) has traditionally been reserved for combined sewer systems—but prolonged wet weather response in separated sanitary systems demands a new approach. This presentation will explore how the Trinity River Authority of Texas (TRA) and its consultants redefined modeling practices by applying GIM to better simulate multi-week infiltration events. Historically considered unsuitable for sanitary systems, GIM proved essential for capturing peak flows and volumes critical to treatment-plant sizing, storage planning, and operational strategy. As the design support needs of engineers and managers evolve, TRA’s hydraulic modeling practices have adapted, expanding run durations and improving calibration methodologies. This case study challenges the status quo and sets a new standard for how InfoWorks ICM software’s hydrology can be used to meet real-world operational demands.

Creating and customizing families is likely one of the most desired advanced skills in Revit software, and learning the Family Editor can be challenging—not only due to the vast amount of knowledge there is to be gained, but also because much of the resources to learn the Family Editor are focused on architectural examples and processes. This lab will provide an introduction into the Family Editor from a structural perspective. While we can apply the fundamental ideas to any discipline, we will structurally focus the examples.

This class will show 5 examples that will help you to understand survey functionality within AutoCAD Civil 3D software—and they're not just limited to survey tasks. These 5 real-world examples will show how data misinterpretation can result in costly engineering mistakes. You'll also discover how to use a project in both assumed coordinates and real-world systems; how to automate cadastral and topographical feature creation tasks; how to add and manage extended data to survey points and features; and how to use survey data to set up repeatable corridor targeting scenarios. We will do a deep and rapid dive into these subjects and you will leave amazed by the variety of things you can do using the survey functionality in AutoCAD Civil 3D software.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WDOT) began using AutoCAD Civil 3D software with the 2010 release. Since that time, more of the department's internal users have switched over and WDOT has switched platforms to 2012 and, more recently, to 2014. As WDOT's use and user base have grown, the department has learned many lessons that have effected how it has moved forward. We will explore these lessons, specifically those that come from the development of standard concepts for use of AutoCAD Civil 3D software and the ways in which those concepts are put into practice in project workflows.

This session will focus on the Civil 3D catchments tool and its integration with the InfoDrainage workflow. You’ll learn the fundamental steps for setting up catchments and importing data into InfoDrainage, as well as strategies to improve workflow efficiency. The presentation will cover the use of the time of concentration calculator within the catchment object for further analysis. Additionally, the session will demonstrate the process of importing catchments into InfoDrainage to start stormwater design seamlessly, highlighting tools and techniques that ensure accurate data transfer. By the end of the session, participants will have the skills to effectively apply these techniques to their own drainage modeling projects, empowering them to optimize design outcomes, streamline project timelines, and enhance overall project quality.

This 60-minute round-table session will discuss methodologies for standardizing multidiscipline style collections, which are the associated libraries and methodologies available to monitor and enforce project-wide adherence to those standards. This discussion will bring into focus the challenges that arise when working with not only multiple firms but also for inner company departments tasked with developing cohesive plan sets that are both 'intelligent' and congruent throughout. Topics open for discussion will include the use of software to check standards; custom programming to effectively check that system configurations match inside each company; and preconfigured add-on packages provided to each consultant with standards embedded into the templates. We will also discuss the questions of which consultant should lead the standard/style development and whether there should be a project-based standard and what it is that should drive those standards. This class will guide you through the new, exciting, cloud-based API for InfraWorks 360 software. We will cover how to get started and extract data from the model, how to generate report from the extracted information, and how to integrate with other providers—all by reading InfraWorks 360 software models using the REST API. Previous programming knowledge is required (Microsoft C# and Microsoft .NET), and knowledge of REST and the JavaScript API is recommended.

If you haven't really seen Bridge Design for InfraWorks 360 software at work, then you need to attend this class. This program magically creates engineering-sensible bridges in your InfraWorks 360 software models. Not only is it amazingly cool, it is also amazingly practical and useful in the way that it provides a representation of a bridge (complete with structural members such as a deck, girders, bearings, abutments, piers, foundations, and piles) along with real numbers to assess its cost. In this class you'll learn how to create these bridges, understand what you're seeing, assess cost, and even tweak the design. You'll be surprised at what you can do, and after class you'll be chomping at the bit to get back to work to apply what you've learned.

This extremely dynamic, feature-filled class will help you to evaluate in context, analyze, and communicate your highly detailed land development site projects using InfraWorks and Civil 3D. We will use real-world projects with InfraWorks 360 and Civil 3D models at the 30%, 60%, 90%, and 100% design stages for quality design checks and public involvement reviews. More specifically, we will bring these sites to life with buildings, ponds, ADA access, accurate parking stripes, and pavement markings. Next, we'll demonstrate how to add more depth by randomizing the vehicles and vegetation with Java script that you can tailor to your own requirements. Corridors can be as complex or simple as our design demands. By using some of the underutilized subassemblies provided with AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 software, we will investigate different approaches for creating our design.
