Have you experienced any of these issues with AutoCAD products: slow opening of drawings, crashing, pausing within AutoCAD, and slow plotting? Clients, sub-consultants, and approving agencies often have DWG™ files that get corrupted. This can cause loss of work and missed deadlines. Drawing corruption can range from small annoying issues to being unable to open or print files. This corruption can affect your files and spread across your projects rapidly. In this session, we will explore methodologies and workflows to prevent files from getting corrupted due to internal and external factors. We will review 7 things that cause drawing slowness, and we’ll show how to repair the drawings.

Have you ever wondered if there's an easier way to ensure that all drawing production staff has equal access to the company's CAD standards? This class will provide an overview of a variety of configuration, productivity, and management solutions that you can deploy using AutoCAD tool palettes. Tool palettes should not be limited to sourcing warehoused block/symbol libraries; they can also facilitate company-specific CAD software configurations, along with a multitude of other tools, to assist CAD managers with the elimination of inconsistencies across workstations, projects, and even offices. Tool palettes can easily become the "one-stop shop" for sourcing preconfigured, controlled content and the mechanism to assist users with configuring their AutoCAD (and AutoCAD software-based) software installations. Last year (Autodesk University 2017) we presented this class; this year we will focus on additional demonstration of the corporate tool palette sets we have deployed across our company over the past 6 years.

This class will explore the design process, the collaboration, and the data flows of a cloud-based instrumentation and electrical design project. The class will also review the advantages of cloud-based technology for this purpose, and we will provide hands-on interaction with a cloud project, so bring your Internet-ready laptop to the class. We will also cover the design and data flows between a synchronized AutoCAD P&ID software project and a cloud instrumentation and electrical project, and we will review the integration with AutoCAD software products required at the client end of the cloud-based project. The class will also have an overall focus of creating, modifying, and generating instrumentation and electrical deliverables such as loop diagrams, junction-box wiring diagrams, hookups, datasheets, and reports.

A common workflow issue is managing drawings with CAD standards issues: blocks on the wrong layer, text with the wrong style or size, and so on. But taking the time to fix these issues can be a daunting process. In this lab, we will walk through several tools that AutoCAD software offers to speed up this process. You will also learn techniques to make your drawings open faster, have smaller file sizes, and reduce crashing. This is a crucial part of your day-to-day workflow!

This class will provide a troubleshooting methodology for repairing corrupt DWG™ files. It will walk through steps to take when DWG™ files are acting weird, not plotting correctly, are slow to open or work in, and so on. This includes diagnosing the root cause of the issue and deciding the appropriate steps for mitigating the problem, including whether it’s the file, an Xref, the user, or the workstation. Sometimes this means repairing backup files, and you’ll learn how to find the most current backup (and suggest Windows file server settings which help). We will show some worst practices that can cause headaches for all members of a team working on a project. Finally, we will also cover some best practices to help avoid file corruption. The software for the class will be AutoCAD Civil 3D software (and include a couple of items specific to it), but a majority of the class applies to anyone using an AutoCAD software-based product. We will provide attendees with a Microsoft Visio diagram showing the process.

Most AutoCAD users have either taken an AutoCAD course or have been trained by existing users within their business. Very rarely do they get to explore some of the tools that aren’t standard. The alarming trend of schedule and cost overruns in conjunction with unprecedented market forces has led to a demand for innovation. Among these results, there has been tremendous progress in the elimination, through automation, of the 4.2% of total capital expenditure that—according to NIST GCR 04-867, National Institute of Standards and Technology U.S. Department of Commerce Technology Administration—is the result of poor project handover. With the Forge platform, as much as 40% of engineering time can be eliminated by enabling rapid access to current project information for engineers, vendors, fabricators, and other stakeholders. Forge software has also enabled digital workflows for lists, reports, logs, scheduling, requests for information, and construction planning during the engineering and design phase, which has, in turn, led to automated construction work packages. You’ll hear about these amazing developments in this lecture.
