Generative design has massively changed the role that architects and engineers play in the process of creating buildings and products. For hundreds of years, our role was to aim for the most optimal result through creating numerous iterations and rapid prototyping. Not only did this process require significant resources, time, budget, worker power, and so on, but it also almost always resulted in the "better" version—but not the "most optimal" one. Through generative design, our role has shifted from creating design iterations to creating algorithms that then are used by the machine—which has significantly more computing power—to generate design iterations, and, later, provide options from which we can choose optimal results. In this lecture, we will talk about the foundations of generative design, the latest tools and technologies, our role in this new ecosystem, and how to define a company culture that supports this new environment.

Small firms constitute almost exactly half of the fields of architecture. It’s always great to hear about all of the amazing scripts and tools that our peers from large firms are able to show off at conferences, but smaller firms often don’t have the depth of support staff (or the overhead hours) to dedicate to custom tools and add-ins, or even a support queue. Let’s talk about how the work of a BIM manager and technical support staff is different when we’re in a small firm. Not only are different tools needed, but also different workflows shine at different scales. Let’s talk about what works well in smaller offices, and what doesn’t translate down from larger practices. This class will be a lightly moderated discussion trying to find some consensus (or at least good debate) on how smaller firms function in the time of big data BIM. This roundtable was kicked off earlier this year at Midwest University. Takeaways from that discussion will be used as a jumping-off point.

Using Autodesk Forge API, manufacturers, engineers, architects and designers will learn how to build a collaborative ecosystem to address the lighting design process/industry efficiently. This class focuses on interior design lighting and deeply analyzes its settings to prototype an automated system that understands the photometric light preferences, and compute the level of lighting and proper structure to select the suitable options set. Our class will show how we can enhance the BIM collaboration level and tackle how Generative Design can support manufacturers to produce more efficient luminaries with less resources, energy and time. We will learn how to integrate IES files with any rendering software to achieve accurate visuals that can be adjusted and updated at real time. Using Forge design automation API, the chosen design will be automatically translated into BIM data from which we can generate electrical plans and simultaneously calculate the amount of light fixtures.

Sir John’s Soane’s Bank of England (built from 1788 to 1833) was destroyed in the 1920 in what is considered by some architectural historians to be the greatest modern architectural travesty. Today, Soane’s Bank of England is revered by architects worldwide for its spectacular use of natural lighting and mesmerizing effects of scale, and inspires the neoclassical architectural approach of Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA). XR (VR, AR, MR) solutions are vital in supporting effective design decision making, collaboration, and communications, and have the potential to revolutionize 21st-century architectural practice. This will be an overview of how architects and designers can save incredibly on costs, and use the right VR technology at the right time during the design process in their workflows. Come and see sample workflows demonstrating how some firms use these technologies as design tools, marketing tools, and virtual mockups, as well as for interactive models, and how they conduct virtual design VR meetings in the cloud.

This class covers the implementation of an integrated BIM system inside the Design and Construction Joint Venture (VCGP + ASTALDI) of the Santiago de Chile Airport. On this project, BIM data life cycle starts with model authoring creation using Autodesk Revit and Civil 3D for 354.000 m2 on buildings and 880.000 m2 on infrastructures. Design Review and Constructability Analysis are performed with the support of Autodesk Revit, Civil 3D, Recap, Infraworks, Navisworks and Tekla Structure. Throughout the project, BIM collaboration and coordination are ensured with Autodesk Navisworks. Connection of BIM models with construction planning (Primavera) is done via Synchro software for 4D simulation. At the end of the project, As Built BIM models (LOD 500) are handed over for O&M software (IBM Maximo) link purposes. A particular attention will be brought to the challenges of implementing such process on a large scale project as well as best practices for BIM deliverables to final clients.

This class will show you how to assess the existing collaborative methods in a Building Information Modeling (BIM) project (Building or Infrastructure) using the Bew-Richards BIM Maturity Model and BS1192 as a reference standard. We will then explain how to identify the potential gaps that could lead to delays and cost inefficiencies and how to eliminate the gaps using workflows and software technology. Typically BIM projects involve multiple disciplines and multiple organizations. To collaborate efficiently and effectively among different disciplines and across different organizations, it is essential to have standard methods and procedures and a common data environment with clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
