XR (VR, AR, MR) solutions are vital in supporting effective design decision making, collaboration, and communications, and have the potential to revolutionize 21st-century architectural practice. This will be an overview of how architects and designers can save incredibly on costs, and use the right VR technology at the right time during the design process in their workflows. Small firms constitute almost exactly half of the fields of architecture. It’s always great to hear about all of the amazing scripts and tools that our peers from large firms are able to show off at conferences, but smaller firms often don’t have the depth of support staff (or the overhead hours) to dedicate to custom tools and add-ins, or even a support queue. Let’s talk about how the work of a BIM manager and technical support staff is different when we’re in a small firm. Not only are different tools needed, but also different workflows shine at different scales. Let’s talk about what works well in smaller offices, and what doesn’t translate down from larger practices. This class will be a lightly moderated discussion trying to find some consensus (or at least good debate) on how smaller firms function in the time of big data BIM. This roundtable was kicked off earlier this year at Midwest University. Takeaways from that discussion will be used as a jumping-off point.

Sir John’s Soane’s Bank of England (built from 1788 to 1833) was destroyed in the 1920 in what is considered by some architectural historians to be the greatest modern architectural travesty. Today, Soane’s Bank of England is revered by architects worldwide for its spectacular use of natural lighting and mesmerizing effects of scale, and inspires the neoclassical architectural approach of Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA). Autodesk, HP, and NVIDIA® have joined forces with RAMSA, CASE, CG Architect, and Sir John Soane Museum to engage the world’s architects to help recreate Soane’s Bank of England in BIM, in the first crowdsourcing project of its kind. Using Autodesk Forge API, manufacturers, engineers, architects and designers will learn how to build a collaborative ecosystem to address the lighting design process/industry efficiently. This class focuses on interior design lighting and deeply analyzes its settings to prototype an automated system that understands the photometric light preferences, and compute the level of lighting and proper structure to select the suitable options set. Our class will show how we can enhance the BIM collaboration level and tackle how Generative Design can support manufacturers to produce more efficient luminaries with less resources, energy and time. We will learn how to integrate IES files with any rendering software to achieve accurate visuals that can be adjusted and updated at real time. Using Forge design automation API, the chosen design will be automatically translated into BIM data from which we can generate electrical plans and simultaneously calculate the amount of light fixtures.

This course will cover the best practices and lessons learned throughout the past year of BIM 360 Document Management software and Civil 3D software together. We will cover tips and tricks for project setup, working with Desktop Connector, and turbo-boosting the users' experiences using Civil 3D files in the cloud.

The dilemma of choosing to open a startup or a nonprofit is always present in the mind of entrepreneurs. In this age, where small startups are raising money and there are huge investments in the architecture, engineering, construction, and owner/operator (AECO) industry, what is missing and what can be an opportunity? In this panel, the San Francisco Computational Design Institute will try to find the winning formula. This effort aims to promote cooperation under the same umbrella and help the AECO community as a whole. We will focus on how we, as experts, can help our community to share our knowledge and provide better solutions. This session will be a panel discussion from Women in BIM related roles discussing the impacts of diversity and inclusion on the construction industry. The questions will be focused on how the impacts of BIM have affected the industry globally and how we can address these issues of skills shortages by retaining and supporting diverse groups such as women. Our class is also aimed to bring together our global community of Women in BIM members which we have now grown to over 800 people. We hope these numbers will continue to grow and begin to support how some of the above issues can be addressed.

In this 60-minute session, you will learn the seamless workflow known as “the triangle of love” between Revit software, Robot Structural Analysis software, and Advance Steel software. You will learn how to link a Revit structural model to Robot Structural Analysis for Structural Steel Code Check and Optimization. You will also learn how to link the optimized Robot Structural Analysis model back to Revit and Advance Steel for connection design and detailing. This class will also cover how to set up and use Autodesk’s BIM 360 Design software for sharing Revit, Robot Structural Analysis, and Advance Steel models, and curate, coordinate, and manage deliverables throughout the project lifecycle. When design project teams have the right information at the right time, work happens faster.

Following last years class, we revisit BIM 360 Design and Revit cloud as we transition from 360 Team to 360 Documents. Here we'll examine the benefits of being in the cloud, what best practices can and should be established with using 360 Docs, and the small ins and outs that could hold back even the strongest Revit users from running a cloud project. Based on firsthand experience, this class will go over what you need to know, what to expect, and when you should be making the transition from cloud to cloud. We'll go over troubleshooting, best practices, order of operations for implementation, and what would be considered optimal project types for BIM 360 Design.

This class will cover concrete bridge modeling in the context of a wider transportation project. The class will explore fast conceptual bridge modeling in InfraWorks software, and workflows to Structural Bridge Design software, Inventor software, and Revit software. You will learn how to rapidly model concrete bridges in InfraWorks and use the “built-in” analysis tools to assess the suitability of the chosen girder system against recognized design standards. You will learn how to use Structural Bridge Design to examine and refine the design and to carry out more-detailed analysis and design checks. You will learn how to use Inventor to refine the InfraWorks bridge model by creating custom parametric bridge components for use in InfraWorks, and you’ll see how to configure them to act as native parts. You will also learn how to transfer the refined bridge model to Revit, where you will add 3D reinforcement using new rebar tools and finally produce drawings and rebar scheduling ready for fabrication.

This talk focuses on how and why Mercury Engineering streamlined 20 distinct construction software packages into one: BIM 360. With up to 20 different construction softwares in use across various projects, and the level of growth and expansion that has seen Mercury Engineering soar to a 2,500-employee business with an annual turnover of €600m, the need for one standard field software and process for all Mercury projects became a major goal within our company. Those 20 different construction softwares meant 20 different suppliers to deal with, resulting in higher costs, inconsistent reporting, and our construction teams having to learn new software and workflows when moving between projects. A working group was set up to look at streamlining the digital construction tools that were in use with a number of areas of interest identified, including the Standardisation of Construction Management Software. All possible solutions were evaluated over 8 functional criteria. Those functionality scores were then mapped against performance. The increase in functionality that we have seen from the BIM 360 platform over the past 12-18 months, coupled with the support systems that Autodesk have put in place with our customer success relationship, resulted in the clear selection of Autodesk BIM 360 as the preferred choice of Mercury Engineering. We will be discussing our company-wide rollout of BIM 360 to date including successes, teething issues and the development of custom integrations to meet the needs of all business units across the portfolio of Mercury Engineering.

This class will focus on how AECOM is using the BIM 360 next-generation tools for digital design coordination and review for both 2D and 3D deliverables. The topics we will cover will include the following: digital design coordination and review versus analog design review—why we made the switch; balancing BIM 360 classic tools with BIM 360 next-generation tools; aligning BIM 360 software with BS1192 and new ISO 19650 requirements; BIM 360 uptake in developing countries such as South Africa; and the role of Autodesk in the implementation of BIM 360.
