2016—welcome to the future
SPOILER ALERT: technology is changing rapidly! That’s right—you heard it here first: the worlds of AEC, manufacturing, and media & entertainment are evolving as new tools create new design possibilities and enable new ways of working.
This shouldn’t be news to anyone who works in these industries. This rapid evolution has been going on for decades. And the pace of change is showing no signs of slowing down. If anything, it’s accelerating, and the changes that lie ahead over the next decade could be as great (or, let’s face it, greater) than the changes the past decade has brought.

A drone designed and flown with AI
Core77.com recently featured a story on AU speaker, professional drone pilot, and AI enthusiast Eli D’Elia, who envisions a drone that’s “AI-grown and AI-flown” —that is, both designed and flown by computers. And he thinks it will appear in the not-too-distant future.
While autonomous drones may sound like something out of the next Star Wars installment, the idea is actually not that far-fetched. Several companies, including D’Elia’s Eagle Eye Metrics, are already dipping their toes into this pond. D’Elia has partnered with Autodesk to design the Hooligan 1000 racing drone, using the Autodesk...

Making headlines: Impact engineering
Design has the power to change lives—and we’re not the only ones taking notice. The October 2016 issue of ENGINEERING.com features a story about AU speaker and inspiring designer, Alan Spybey, whose nonprofit KickStart International is using Autodesk software to help sub-Saharan farmers raise themselves and their families out of poverty.
By designing high-quality, affordable manual irrigation pumps, KickStart has helped millions of farmers escape subsisting on the seasonal crop cycle. “With our pumps, these farmers can grow crops during the dry season,” says Spybey. “That enables them to br...

AU in the news—BIM on ice
Moving large-scale construction projects to the cloud has plenty of advantages—and also a few challenges. Learn all about a BIM megaproject that uses Autodesk 360 project collaboration software in the recent AEC Magazine feature story, “BIM on Ice: Collaborating on Edmonton’s Ice District using Autodesk 360.”
Aubrey Tucker, AU speaker and regional BIM lead for the Stantec architectural firm (1 of 3 such firms employed on the project), talks about what it was like to forge this new path:
“Cloud-based collaboration is a totally different way of working for most people,” says Tucker.
