Using the AU 2013 mobile app with social media

The AU mobile app enables you to keep your schedule in your pocket and to see what other attendees are doing. The AU mobile app can also connect to your social media accounts, and we want to explain what happens when you post to Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn.

If you don't connect any of your social media accounts, your status updates and photos stay within the mobile app and can be viewed only by other AU mobile app users. Here's what happens if you do connect your accounts.

Twitter

When you post to Twitter, the text you type and any hashtag you select for your status update goes through to Twitter. The hashtag #AU2013 is always appended, whether or not you select it. Pictures are not transmitted and session links change to link to the AU home page. If you type a link in yourself, it will be available in Twitter. You do not need to include http:// in front of the link. In this example, I typed the link, but did not type the hashtag or check into it.

Twitter

Best practices for posting to Twitter:

  • If you want to share a link, type it in.
  • Don't post photos without including a caption that would tell a Twitter user something useful.
  • Don't just check in to the #AU2013 hashtag—that puts messages on Twitter that don't say anything.
  • Consider whether it is appropriate to share an AU mobile app post on Twitter. Don't automatically send everything to Twitter. It makes it harder for people who are following the hashtag to find worthwhile information.

Facebook

When you post to Facebook, any photos you add are transmitted to your Facebook timeline. If you don't include a photo, the AU logo appears. The hashtag is appended in parentheses. The post includes a link to the AU website. You must type the http:// for a link to be clickable in Facebook.

Facebook

LinkedIn

On LinkedIn, the photo appears in your activity feed. Links are not active unless you type the http:// in front of them. A link to the AU website always appears as shown below.

Linked_in

It's wonderful to share your AU 2013 activity with your colleagues and friends on social media. Just make sure you are sharing with enough context for it to be interesting or useful. It's a good idea to review a few of your AU mobile app posts on your social channels to make sure you understand what will appear when you post.

Have a great AU, and see you on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook as well as in the mobile app.
