Years ago I began exploring the possibilities of creating the classical orders of architecture in Revit software. Parametric families are the cornerstones of Revit software, and this project presented an ideal way to push Family Editor to its limits. Challenges were many, but there were plenty of successes as well. This session is part case study (of the journey I took from the original idea all the way to the publication of a book) and part tutorial (to show the 'nuts and bolts' of how we built the software families), all demonstrated directly in Revit software. In this session I'll talk about scaling, content reuse, profiles, moldings, formulas, nested components, and complex forms in both the traditional and adaptive component Family Editors. I'll show the final successful versions and a few not-so-successful earlier versions as well. If you're interested in historic architecture and/or classical form, or you just like pushing Family Editor to extremes, then this session is sure to please.

Whether the end product is a building or a motorcycle, the design to make process typically uses a variety of applications and services from multiple vendors,. One of the challenges in managing such a process is moving data between these diverse tools and automating the steps that sometimes involve manual intervention. Traditional file-based point-to-point interoperability solutions have fallen short in addressing these problems because every process is unique and requires a customized solution. The future Forge Workflow Automation API will eliminate these problems by allowing custom workflows to be rapidly built and deployed across any set of software products.

In this class, we will focus on the connection between the BIM model and project specifications. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then your specifications are a picture of your construction documents. Yet these two document types are typically done separately and without any automated coordination, requiring users to manually assure that the objects represented in the model actually are correctly represented in the specifications. We will go through the process of setting up the coordination environment, as well as the scenario of coordination with those outside your office environment who may be off your company network. We will review the process of automating and controlling the flow of information and review case studies of successful projects and clients that are utilizing these methods.

Contemporary rail projects are vastly complex due to an intersection of several key factors. The deliverables and support that agencies and contractors ask for are scaling with new technology. These technologies are relatively new to the rail design space, and there are currently no precedents for implementing them. On two similar rail projects, tailored workflows and custom automation tools were developed in order to deliver the required standard documentation, visualization, clash detection, and asset management deliverables. The synergy between automation, connected BIM, and creative project workflow were essential to the execution of these projects. In this session, we’ll examine the project needs, collaboration between BIM 360 software and ProjectWise, and automation with the Subassembly Composer, Dynamo, Forge, and LISP.
