Integrating building performance analysis results in the early stage of conceptual design supports effective design exploration and decision making. Such integration requires domain expertise and can be technically challenging, time consuming, and computationally expensive. However, one of the challenges in the architecture domain is the lack of diverse data sets to train effective prediction models. This talk will provide a brief overview of the potential of machine learning in building analysis-prediction models and demonstrate how we can capitalize on generative design to compensate for the lack of data. We will present a workflow where generative design features for Revit software, Dynamo software, and Insight software are used to generate a synthetic data set for training a machine-learning model for energy-analysis prediction.

This case study will showcase Autodesk Forma software's new AI-based embodied carbon analysis, built in collaboration with EHDD, examining real-life use cases by Stantec practitioners to evaluate embodied carbon at the earliest stages of design. First, we'll expand on our AU 2023 product demo, exploring Stantec's partnership with Forma, and establishing the user needs and guiding principles that led us to the in-market embodied carbon analysis. Then, Jack Rusk, who leads the EHDD team behind the C.Scale engine that powers the analysis in Forma, will explain how these same user needs manifested in the computational back end, giving a look behind the curtain at the AI model. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly affect our industry. How can we use AI to improve our programming skills and make us more efficient? In this session, we'll go over the creation of a program using LISP to copy files from one location to another. Once created, we will use AI to convert a portion of that code into a visual basic script (VBS) so that the user can continue to work while files copy in the background.

The evolution of design and drafting has increasingly given us tools that inform and expedite our processes. But what can we learn from the implementation of CAD, building information modeling (BIM), and now AI to prepare teams for the future of design tools? Working at a multidisciplinary design firm encompassing planning, landscape, architecture, and interiors has shown me that technology adoption and digital maturity happen at different rates. But regardless of the tools used and efficiency in practice, projects are completed. Focusing on the finished work, lessons learned can become the quantitative outcomes we bring to the beginning of projects in this era of outcome-focused process. By distilling 50+ years of digital asset creation and the analysis of completed projects, we can uncover the potential embedded within our digital archives.

Much has been made of the existential threat AI poses to many professions. However, due to the complex nature of architectural projects, we need not fear losing our design agency (or employment) to an AI architect. While there's work over which architects want and need to maintain control, there's also plenty of work that architects would gladly hand over to an AI bot. Using AI allows architects to focus on meaningful design work, rather than tedious minutiae. Also, by passing off more-menial tasks to AI, junior staff can be empowered to get more-meaningful experience. This will be demonstrated through practical examples of how AI is integrated into multiple workflows and processes at ZGF Architects, including project benchmarking, Revit automation/standardization, and semantic search of code documents.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the operation and management of public water systems, improving efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. However, there is uncertainty about the value it can bring. By understanding these dimensions, participants will be better equipped to navigate the complex landscape of AI in water, fostering responsible and sustainable practices for the benefit of communities and the environment. We will discuss a multi-tier approach to using AI-enabled technology, such as that developed by Autodesk, to equip users to proceed with use of the technology. Each of the four tiers—cost-focused AI, performance-driven AI, human-centered AI, and socially responsible AI—has business goals and stakeholder values connected to it. For example, cost-focused AI results in efficiency gain or increased profits, whereas performance-driven AI would result in improved customer service or reliability, and socially responsible AI provides equitable infrastructure.

Bifrost is a powerful graphical programming environment for creating procedural visual effects simulations, geometry, rigging, and animation. In this session, we'll showcase new, modular, deep-learning workflows in Maya software using Bifrost. We will demonstrate how to use Bifrost for procedurally generating training data for AI systems, as well as how to deploy trained AI models in Bifrost using new Bifrost nodes designed for deep learning. The session will include practical examples of industry problems that are suited to a media and entertainment audience, such as using AI for complex rigging kinematic solvers.
