Creating and managing a factory digital twin is becoming a necessity. In this session, we will share customer examples to show how a digital twin can offer a huge ROI. We will focus on helping attendees engage in strategic factory digital twin projects by answering the following questions: 1) How to assess the opportunity, and collect the metrics? 2) How to compete? 3) How to build the right proposal with services and tools?

Transportation projects involve a diverse set of stakeholders to review and approve a project before they can move forward to construction. Given today’s technologies, those stakeholders are influenced through many different mediums—drawings, intelligent models, digital twins, and immersive environments. In this presentation, we’ll look at a transportation project from early conceptualization and preliminary design options through to the project review process. We’ll present alternatives to communicate, collaborate, and convince stakeholders throughout the process by using high-resolution 3D and AI-derived planimetric data to conceptualize the project in an immersive MR environment using the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection. The engineered roadway and line of sight will be delivered as a driveable experience for stakeholders to review the project before it’s built.

At the project A16 de Groene Boog, we’ve implemented building information modeling (BIM) with the real “single source of truth” (SSOT) principals based on the ISO 19650 standards. This is not only for use of the “basic” BIM subjects like 3D, 4D, and clash detection, but also for the SSOT for geographic information system (GIS), TWIN16 (the digital twin product for virtual testing of tunnel technical installations for this project), and the communications department for stakeholders like visual (360-degree) presentations and external communication platforms.

Whether you’re scanning an existing site or capturing as-built data near the end of a project, you've put in the work to create a digital twin of your site in ReCap software. Now stakeholders need to review it or perhaps teammates need it to further their design. We'll discuss how to use secure Autodesk platforms like BIM 360, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Autodesk Drive to connect colleagues, partners, and stakeholders to your data. We’ll start with understanding various workflows to get your project up in the cloud. Once there, we'll use collaborative tools in the Autodesk Forge Viewer API to create markups and annotations that can be synced down to the project locally. We'll cover how teammates and partners can consume your data in other products like Revit software, Civil 3D software, and InfraWorks software. Lastly, we'll discuss where the product may be heading, and how that could affect current workflows. Whether you’re a surveyor or a BIM manager tasked with managing point cloud data, you’ll find value in this course.

Parsons will highlight the capabilities available within an airport digital twin by showing our work to support the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport digital twin project. The digital twin includes a main runway and passenger terminal. We’ll detail our work to help define digital governance standards, develop a runway-specific asset ontology, and integrate data across multiple source systems: Civil 3D software, Revit software, Infor EAM, Johnson Controls, Veoci Part 139 airfield inspection software, Esri GIS, and ViewMondo weather station data running within the Microsoft Azure Digital Twins cloud. The twin provides real-time updates via Internet of Things (IOT) runway sensors that specify temperature, surface temperature, humidity, and water film. This session will share unique insights and lessons learned regarding the technical and management workflows to plan and execute a digital twin for critical infrastructure assets. A digital twin addresses the industry challenge of how to automate and unify the management of complex civil infrastructure.

Multisite owners have unique challenges. These companies must view digital transformation and valuable technical opportunities through the lens of scalability, standardization, and repeatability. In this panel, Kyle Hudson (vice president of operations at VIATechnik) will moderate a conversation between digital leaders from three unique multisite owners: Xavier Loayza Jaramillo, design technology lead at Chick-fil-A; Sean Christopher, senior preconstruction manager at Amazon; and Joel Shetterly, head of design at Compass Coffee. We’ll dig into what makes the digital building journey so challenging, unique, and powerful for multisite owners. We'll discuss techniques, lessons learned, and opportunities for multisite owners to properly use virtual design and construction (VDC) solutions, digital twins, and digital project delivery. And we'll hear what makes these three owners unique in their approaches to digital transformation.

In 2018, SYSTRA launched an R&D program called DEV4BIM to benefit from the building information modeling (BIM) data created in our projects, and move toward a data-centered engineering approach. This strategy has been closely linked to an Autodesk strategy, and it promises to develop a more data-centered and open platform that gives us the possibility to develop our own digital solutions that we can integrate into efficient digital engineering processes. This class will showcase the key results of these four years of R&D and the impact on our BIM program. We’ll also share our lessons learned on the Autodesk journey toward this platform-as-a-service approach. The second part of the class will provide insight into our digital twin innovation strategy and our expectations toward Autodesk to help us ensure effective WLC data continuity. Indeed, we’re convinced that efficient collaboration with editors is key to developing digital twin solutions and services to develop sustainable asset management of railway infrastructures.

Digital twins may change the way owners interpret and ultimately use that data, but owners have to know where to start. “Digital twin” is an industry buzzword these days, and there’s no shortage of companies who claim to be experts on these data-rich models. However, if the concept of a digital twin is going to survive its initial 15 minutes of fame, we must stop viewing digital twins as products and start seeing them for what they really are: intricately detailed processes. Every digital twin solution on the market looks and functions differently from the next. However, they all share a similar goal: to re-create a physical space in a dynamic 3D environment. But the true appeal of a digital twin lies in the data. While most digital twin solutions have figured out how to integrate data and models, only a few have figured out how to present that data in an immersive, interactive and useful way.
