My First Digital Twin: A Real-Time Rendering Story
The complexities around digital twins are usually enough to make most tech enthusiasts in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries think twice before embarking upon their use. From setting up IoT hubs and sensors to linking them with intelligent models and hosting them in client-facing experiences, the concept can be daunting. However, developments in gaming engines and their innate customization and ability to craft a story and experience mean that they are fast becoming great tools in the creation of digital twins. In this talk, we will look at the steps and stages involved in creating a digital-twin experience using the Unreal Engine game machine, in addition to showcasing industry case studies. We will break down the steps, from linking models from packages such as Revit software and 3ds Max software, to connecting to simple sensor data and visualizing the output. Here we explore the toolset and process required to help you embark on your own first digital twin.

Creating a Digital Twin Based on Forge and Industry Standards (DEXPI, OPC UA, and FMI)
Digital twins of process plants are digital replicas of the physical plant that contain information of the plant structure and of the dynamics of how the processes and devices operate. In simulation-based digital twins (SBDTs), first-principles simulation models are used to obtain dynamics of the targeted plant. These applications can be used to derive nonmeasured information of the simulated system, to obtain high-fidelity predictions, or to perform system-wide optimization for improving plant performance. This class will present an extension to the work showcased at Autodesk University 2018. In this class, we’ll present a Forge-based SBDT that uses a Model Broker, a novel solution for automatic simulation model generation. Model Broker utilizes the DEXPI information format available from AutoCAD Plant 3D software to generate the underlying simulation model of the SBDT. In the example implementation used in this class, the generated model is connected to the plant using OPC UA.

How BIM Enhances Bridge Design Capabilities
SYSTRA expertise in bridge has started developing design capabilities for a High Speed Railway line and for an Elevated Metro line with the system integrated concept of the U-shape viaduct. We are now designing bridge structures for all types of transport modes including long-span bridges such as Chacao bridge in Chile, and road causeways such as The Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Causeway in the gulf of Kuwait. With the US-based company IBT, newly acquired in 2017, SYSTRA has reached in 2018 the 8th rank of the International ENR ranking for bridge engineering.This expertise is strategic to SYSTRA global capacity to deliver mass transit or rail infrastructure worldwide. That's why at the early stage of our BIM deployment we focused in developing internal solutions and design workflows that meet our clients needs and enhance our design efficiency and quality. This class will give you a global view of our internal BIM program for bridge by presenting our design solutions and project applications. The ambition of this program is to increase the efficiency of our engineers and the robustness of our design when creating the bridge assets and is aiming to provide to our client a digital twin of their infrastructure that is fitted for use during operation and maintenance. You will see how our bridge experts have embraced BIM in their design workflows from early stage to construction design using applications such as "BIM in One Click" for linear infrastructures or CABLOA for pre-stressing design.We will also share our feedback on 3D reinforcement design using Revit and its Sofistik plugin for rebar detailing and how to increase the efficiency using design automation. The end of the presentation will be dedicated to looking ahead, exchanging thoughts around application of AI or generative design to bridge, and sharing our initiatives on how to use BIM models for operation and maintenance purposes using our HYPERASSET solution.

Digital Twin for Building Owners 2021: Optimizing Data and Delivery

When this digital twin journey was first shared by Brandon Wlosinski (Walt Disney Parks and Resorts—WDPR) and Dorian Chau (Autodesk) at Autodesk University 2020 as a roundtable discussion on digital twins for building owners, it focused on objectives, value, and vision. This year, the speakers are expanding the session into in a panel discussion to include Ken Kurihara from WDPR; Bill Kwon, VP of Digital at CRTKL, and Bob Bray, Autodesk Tandem GM, as well as invited enterprise business leaders. The panelists will share their experiences with industry challenges involving the optimization of project data for digital handover and other digital twin use cases. Digital twin practices have gained momentum in the building industry in the past year, and we will discuss the impact on and value to the businesses and changes in management approaches. Our panelists will share their perspectives on why digital twins are important from both the owners’ and consultants’ perspectives with digital handover, smart operations, and greater building insights.

Hospital Twin
This session details developing a digital twin for the healthcare market, specifically for operating theatres where we try to combine the medical and technical world to improve patient safety and reduce surgical site infection which leads to mortality. Creating this digital twin is a sum of data analytics, CFD simulations, and the use of visualisation tools such as VR and AR. In practise, this leads to a better design process and lifecycle of the OR that guarantees the optimal safety for the patient. We are still in a development phase and using the following Autodesk products: Revit, Fusion 360, CFD, 3ds Max and Interactive.
