A new metro Line, with 19 kilometers and encompassing 15 stations, a maintenance yard, and 2 primary substations, represents a landmark achievement in utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM). A large-scale infrastructure project has set a new benchmark for the industry by implementing a comprehensive BIM (Building Information Modeling) approach, encompassing all disciplines, including geotechnical engineering and laser scanning for connection stations with existing lines. The project has also standardized data using IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) and introduced a new standard for contractual items, including a new contractual measurement method. Automated analyses have been integrated into robotic processes, and a train dynamic models to ensure equipment installations has been utilized and with data management. These innovations have significantly enhanced project quality and established the project as a national reference.

This session will explain the latest volcanic episodes in Iceland—a constant threat to nearby town and infrastructure in the Reykjanes Peninsula. In November 2023, the 4,000-person town of Grindavík was evacuated. Working in close cooperation with the Civil Protection of Iceland, Verkís designed and managed the construction of lava diversion barriers to protect the 225 MW geothermal power plants at Svartsengi, the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, and Grindavík. HEC-RAS was used to model lava flows using the latest topographical drone mapping of the surface and fresh lava. The barriers were designed and modeled in Civil 3D software, and Autodesk Construction Cloud was used to communicate design and stakeout data to multiple contractors. This study will show how the barrier design was optimized during the volcanic eruption by comparing theoretical models against actual lava flow behavior. Now 11 km of massive lava barriers have been built, which worked successfully against the lava flow and saved the town of Grindavík.

As urban areas expand, the challenge is clear: evolve into sustainable and inclusive environments or risk growing disparities and instability. Many of the challenges we are trying to overcome are inherently spatial, so we must first understand their immediate surroundings in order to bring solutions to the table. Urban & Infrastructure projects should be able to collect and manage data to identify needs and prioritize them. Through the integration of BIM and GIS, we can adopt a geographic and holistic approach to overcome the challenges ahead of us by enabling the project to be visualized and assessed in that real-world context allowing professionals to enhance project understanding. In this session, we'll showcase how to use drawing standardization, Autodesk proprietary formats, and publicly available information to quickly create dynamic near-real-time models of our sites in InfraWorks software. This process can often take hours to carefully insert each bit of information and set a style to carry out and get the desired look. However, by using drawing standards and InfraWorks rule sets, we can generate a site model in a fraction of the time—making this ideal for discussion with stakeholders and the public.

While the Civil 3D-using industry still relies on other methods for storing project files, Autodesk Construction Cloud offers faster and more efficient working experiences by allowing you to download only the files you need and providing the latest files to collaborators. Autodesk Construction Cloud is beneficial for large-scale projects involving multiple firms, but even our small to mid-size land development projects at Kimley-Horn have found value in using Autodesk Construction Cloud.
