This course is designed to change the way we think about the fundamentals of quality and consistency, and to address how to implement and integrate BIM 360 Field software into a company’s culture. We will discuss the importance of early buy-in as a team and firm all the way through the supply chain to subcontractors, architects, and owner. We will present some best practices and procedures that plant construction has used to successfully implement BIM 360 Field software to provide standardization and best practices for quality on our projects. We will also discuss the opportunities and challenges we’ve faced along the way.

In the construction industry, we've found that iPads have become extremely useful. However, most of the time we give an iPad to a new user and decide they know how with very little training. In this class, we are going to discuss using a tablet such as an iPad to do the work of BIM 360 Field software and BIM 360 Glue software. First, we are going to familiarize ourselves with the programs. Then, we are going to use some of the hidden tools available with BIM 360 Field and BIM 360 Glue. For instance, we may want to put pushpins in our documentation and have those sync up between users. We would also like to explore getting viewports to sync up in both BIM 360 Field and BIM 360 Glue. Lastly, we will learn how to take pictures in dark rooms using the flashlight on the iPad. At the end of class, you'll be a more proficient user of BIM 360 Field and BIM 360 Glue.

This workshop will provide an introduction to lean design and construction concepts. It will highlight the benefits and opportunities that lean implementation provides, and it will give the participants a road map showing how to start using these principles on projects. Lean in design and construction focuses primarily on project improvement by identifying and eliminating waste and enhancing value to the customer. This workshop will not only familiarize the participants with lean vocabulary, but it will also provide them with a roadmap to understand how to employ these concepts in their organizations and on their projects. We will also review a cloud-based tool that helps facilitate this production planning and last planner process.

Using only Revit software during the schematic design phase of the project enables you to quickly explore design alternatives through iterative design. Tapping into the information-rich models for quantity takeoffs helps to produce more accurate cost estimates, compressing the timeline from design to procurement to construction, virtually eliminating errors and omissions, and reducing the likelihood of RFIs and change orders. With integrated analysis for energy and carbon, you gain design insight where the most important design decisions are made. Perform wind and solar radiation analysis with user-friendly tools. Conduct cloud-based whole building energy analysis with web-based software. Optimize energy efficiency, and work toward carbon neutrality earlier in the design process. With faster, more accurate energy analysis of building design proposals, architects and designers can work with sustainability in mind earlier in the process, plan proactively, and build better.

In this class you'll learn about the importance of having and utilizing a catalog of standard assemblies in order to build a substation in Inventor software.

This class will cover the use of many Autodesk, Inc., Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, such as Revit Architecture software, Revit MEP software, Revit Structure software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Navisworks software, and cloud services, including BIM 360 Glue software and BIM 360 Field software, in order to assist in the daily maintenance and operations of airports.

In this presentation, Skanska leaders from Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States will describe growth and usage of BIM 360 Field software. We'll share implementation successes and challenges across countries and organizations with diverse composition. In this session, we'll present common uses of BIM 360 Field across 4 countries, more than 1,200 projects, and 8,600 users. We'll present on the value and benefits of using BIM 360 Field for quality processes, and share best practices for setting up teams. We improve job-site efficiency by automating the electronic exchange of construction documents, models, and job-site information (such as punch lists, quality assurance/quality control checklists, and commissioning data). With more than 2.5 million issues logged, 1.4 million checklists completed, and 1.8 million field photos, Skanska's field quality and collaboration in BIM 360 Field software is important.

Laser scanners, long used in plant design, are now being adopted by the structural steel industry. Will this mean better integration of the design office, fabrication shop, and construction site? In this roundtable discussion, we’ll explore ways to use laser scanners in your Advance Steel and Revit workflows. As the horizontal construction world continues to catch up with the all-encompassing contractors, we will once again dive into the use of 3D heavy civil construction models and the workflow associated with them. We will cover the benefits of using a 3D model, starting at the bid and going through construction and lastly as-builts. Shown through the eyes of a contractor, we will share both field and office experiences while displaying project examples. We will discuss creating models for bidding, procuring field data to support 3D models (including unmanned aerial vehicles and laser scanning), using AutoCAD Civil 3D software to build excavation models for quantification and automated machine guidance, modeling to determine means and methods, utilizing the 3D model in the field for stake less layout, and using clash in Navisworks software. We will also cover virtual design coordination with owners and subcontractors, decreased turnaround time on requests for information / change orders, safety benefits, point clouds, and fabrication plans.

Every morning, the PCL Construction team that’s building the 11-acre, 516-room JW Marriott Bonnet Creek hotel in Orlando, Florida, starts with the same routine: reviewing a high-resolution map of the site (captured by one of the firm’s daily drone flights) to effectively plan and coordinate the day’s work. A couple of years ago, using up-to-date drone maps for daily site and logistics planning was unheard of. Now, PCL project teams can’t live without them. This use case is part of a larger trend: drone data, once confined to the VDC team, has become a “must have” resource for entire project teams, owners, and more. In fact, on this JW Marriott project alone, there are more than 50 stakeholders regularly viewing their drone maps and models. In this session, PCL’s JW Marriott project team—Matthew Dodge, project manager; and Kevin Johnson, construction modeling specialist—will share the impact that drone data has had on this project and how other contractors can do the same.

You want MEP building analysis, but there is no architectural model. Are you kidding? Should you continue with 2D or maintain your skills and create your own building model using the conceptual massing tools? MEP building analysis is easy when you use the massing tools in Autodesk Revit MEP 2013 software—a largely underused tool for the MEP designer. In this class, you will discover how to build an analysis model using linked 2D data as a wireframe model. From this wireframe, we will construct a mass model, add external walls and windows, and populate the interior with walls rooms and spaces. We will continue the process, creating a space schedule for checking and naming purposes and exporting to gbXML. Additionally, we will take a look at some of the new features in Revit MEP 2013 that enable you to make best use of a linked architectural file—whether you use the data attached to the architect's model or override it in the design analysis model.

Are you intimidated by what it might take to handle your project in Revit®-based software? Are you on the verge of starting a large project? In this class, you learn a systematic approach for handling your most complex Revit projects, while maintaining your sanity. This advanced class discusses how to get your team prepared for the project, build a project plan, and implement and maintain the project along the way. We talk about the functionality of Revit for large projects including hardware and network requirements, deploying Revit, building templates, using Revit worksharing efficiently, working with Revit Server, and finally, best practices and tips and tricks for supporting end users working on large projects.

Can you really use only simple photographs as the base to build a fully parametric Building Information Model of existing buildings or infrastructure in Autodesk Revit? Don’t you need a laser scan? Or traditional survey?

In this hands on lab, you will have the opportunity to use Autodesk Recap to take photographs taken on an iPhone to produce a Autodesk Recap point cloud. We will take you through the full the whole process of this, from signing up your account through to the advanced GPS powered coordination features. We will then look at how we can use the outputs of this, including the mesh within Autodesk Remake, where we will show you how to import the data and visually inspect it. We will also dive into Autodesk Revit, where we will build a simple Autodesk Revit model which could be used for continued development. And…. We have a few surprises in store as well if we get the time!

Further to all of the above, we would love to share our findings of how we have utilised photogrammetry on large sites, such as a lift bridge on the Isle of Wight and to calculate cut and fill requirements to restore infrastructure after the floods in Cumbria. We will share our lessons learnt, best practice and even give you the opportunity to see the very impressive full dataset which was generated using over 600 30 mega pixel photos taken using a UAV (Unmanned Ariel Vehicle, or “Drone”).

This class will cover the connected BIM workflow for using InfraWorks software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Inventor software, Revit software, Navisworks software, and ReCap software. We’ll show how this workflow can be used to take transportation design to the next level, and also we’ll highlight lessons learned while solving real-world infrastructure challenges. We’ll dig into various steps in the process, such as refinement and optimization in alignments and profiles in Civil 3D for better design in InfraWorks, customization of parametric bridge parts, and assemblies created and modified within Inventor, and how they can be easily utilized in InfraWorks—which gives more freedom and ability to fulfill design requirements. We’ll show how this workflow was used to overcome the design challenges for design-build projects and BIM interoperability among different engineering software systems.

As Project Integrator on the B2 Modular Housing Project at Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, New York, SHoP Construction (SC) is currently implementing the Autodesk BIM 360 Glue™ cloud-based management solution to provide comprehensive collaboration across the project team and model supply chain. Starting in 2010 on the Barclays Center Arena in Brooklyn, NY, SHoP Construction prototyped a web-based portal that enabled project stakeholders to track the fabrication and installation progress of 12,000 uniquely sized weathered steel panels for the facade. The constantly updated SC 4D sequencing model evolved into a critical tool for the design-build team to understand the impact of production and schedule changes. This class will focus on how Autodesk BIM 360 services and web-based portals enable improved project visualization and information access for all project stakeholders. The class will demonstrate how to move from linear workflows to real-time collaboration with hyperlinks to access live data. We will highlight how the project team is using Autodesk BIM 360 to streamline the team’s transition from design development through to the factory production phase of the work for the largest prefab modular building in the world

The BUILD panel, moderated by Autodesk Senior Director, Rick Rundell, will review snapshots of applied research within the context of Architecture Engineering and Construction Industries followed by an extended discussion surrounding such topics. By positioning Reality Computing technologies (UAV’s, 3D Scanning, and reality capture); Construction Automation (3D Printing and Design Robotics); Automated Computational Workflows (Dynamo driven structural optimization-to robotic fabrication); and integrated building control systems through Physical Computing the discussion will frame the state of the art with the goal of understanding the critical interrelationships that will be required during the next ten years of research and development.

Four perspectives, each representing disparate aspects of AEC research, will be presented. First, Gustav Fagerstrom, Senior Technical Design at the global engineering firm BuroHappold, will present a series of Drone-based reality capture experiments using Autodesk’s ReCap that focus on the gathering, analysis, and three dimensional visualization of complex data from existing urban contexts. Nick Cote, a Design Roboticist at Autodesk’s Pier9 robotics research laboratory, will present a series of projects leveraging emerging computational workflows that link 3D design space, performance optimization, and automated fabrication through Design Robotics. Nathan King, DDes, BUILD Programs Manager, will present the contemporary context of automation in AEC industries through the lens of Robotics and Additive Manufacturing. Finally, Andy Payne, DDes, Principal Research Engineer at Autodesk,  will discuss the potential of intelligent building control systems to meet the multifaceted demands of user satisfaction and performance thus allowing the built environment to sense, respond, and adapt over time.
