This class will discuss using the 3ds Max software development kit (SDK) for automating common tasks within 3ds Max software. We will spend time discussing the .NET API and the Python environments, and we’ll compare them both. The Python SDK is using a newer API called MaxPlus, but it is not fully exposing the C++ API. While .NET API is exposing most of the C++ API, it can sometimes be more difficult to work with. This class covers the use of the Lip, Boss, and Grill commands inside of Inventor software. We'll discuss real-world examples of how to create lips, bosses, and grills in Inventor software. We'll also take a look at the Split command, and we'll show how to use multiple solid bodies within a part, including how to control their visibility and material. Prior part-creation and sketch-creation knowledge will be useful.

This class will be a quick introduction to 3ds Max software scripting, customization, plug-in development, and general hacking. We will introduce each customization aspect, including the new Max Creation Graphs software, MAXScript scripting language, Microsoft .NET API, Python programming language, and the "dark side" C++ SDK. We also will show how you can gain notoriety in the 3ds Max software customization space by publishing your application to the Autodesk Exchange Store, and we’ll discuss the various community aspects around 3ds Max software customization. This session is based on our experience at KPF of pushing BIM implementation on the next level. Steady progress was re-invigorated by increasing client demands and industry expectations, but to make the most of that we had to take the time to review all of our processes and documentation to ensure that we could both meet expectations and also push our work in new and exciting directions. Some of the areas we will focus on include re-evaluating your BIM Implementation Strategy; how far have you come, how far do you still need to go; is your documentation fit for purpose; what makes an effective BEP template; how to approach BIM with your clients; what to do when there is no EIR, and how to respond to one when there is; boosting your training processes; what we did to evaluate and re-focus our training efforts; considering the skills required of your firm's employees, do you have an adequate support system in place; adding extra deliverables to your process; responding to the rise in demand for IFC and COBie; how to effectively introduce new tools (e.g., Dynamo/Enscape) to your workflows; are your QA/QC processes up to the job of evaluating increasingly complex models and datasets, or do you still use 'red pen' markups.

Two books will guide this roundtable discussion: Principles: Life and Work by Ray Dalio and The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande. The goal is to apply ideas that these books present and discuss how we use them in BIM (Building Information Modeling) for the efficient and effective execution of deliverables. The primary software focus will be Revit best practices. Principles is a master class in rational thinking. The main theme is that finding truth is the best way to make decisions, and that ego, emotion, and blind spots prevent you from discovering the truth. The Checklist Manifesto is a critical look at how we can use checklists to dramatically reduce errors and increase discipline in an organization. Gawande, also a surgeon, chronicles his ultimately successful attempt at introducing checklists to radically improve surgical outcomes globally through the World Health Organization and its application in other industries like construction, finance, and aviation.

Products have been designed as if resources are unlimited. The take, bake, make, waste approach has valuable materials, erroneously called waste, landfilled. We need to design products so that these resources loop back into a material cycle. This closed loop approach recognizes natural limits and values materials through the end of their first product life and instead designs products for a Circular Economy. This session will contextualize the crisis our current system has created, then share case studies that illustrate both environmental and economic advantages gained by businesses with cyclical material flows. The session will conclude with a first hand account inside the Circular Economy design process, as the winner of the 2016 Cradle to Cradle Product Design Challenge for Best Professional Product shares insights into how he used AutoDesk’s Fusion 360 software to develop his award winning BikeShare Helmet.

The result: a possible answer to this global problem based on collective input, ideas, and innovation. During the forum, attendees will vote on their favorite solution. An increase of technology and mobile devices on construction projects means we collect more data than ever. Clients are asking for access to this data as part of our turnover package in electronic format. Traditionally, our projects have not been set up at the beginning to facilitate this transfer of data. Simple things like Locations and Asset IDs are not in the contract documents until the end of the project. Also, owners don’t know what they want or need. This class will follow a case-study format of a completed project started before the client had purchased Building Ops software. It will follow the process to set up BIM 360 Field software to build and utilize the Equipment matrix, and we’ll cover how the initial assumptions and decisions that were made affected the turnover process. We will discuss our lessons learned and give time to focus attention on early to limit rework and reorganization of data to meet the turnover needs. This discussion will focus on the transition from BIM 360 Field software to Building Ops software, but it could be applied to most FAMS software. This session features BIM 360 Field and Building Ops.
