SHM Architects Growth Enhanced by Autodesk Revit and Construction Cloud

SHM Architects Growth Enhanced by Autodesk Revit and Construction Cloud

Customer challenge

SHM Architects, a privately owned boutique design studio founded in 2005 serving clients across the United States with a consistently growing number of bespoke projects and designers, realized a need to move from localized design teams using AutoCAD Architecture to Revit and the Autodesk Construction Cloud, as well as to align with their peer's digital transformations from simple drawings to a BIM workflow.

The firm, which had worked with AutoCAD Architecture for so long, was concerned that internal teams initially would not see the reasons to make a change, and understood their associates worried about a learning curve disrupting project timelines and interrupting productivity. SHM Architects, therefore, engaged COINS, their long-time Autodesk Solution Provider, to develop a plan to introduce Revit and BIM to the firm as it quickly grew in size.

Project goals

COINS understands the benefits of moving production from AutoCAD to Revit and BIM by connecting teams, workflows and data across the entire project lifecycle - from conception and drafts to design and production - and their consultants began working carefully with SHM's leadership to develop short and long-term goals including the following:

  • Improving intra-office and stakeholder collaboration and communication
  • Enabling the ability to work from anywhere
  • Boosting productivity and ensuring that SHM's people are working on real-time and coordinated information
  • Using the Autodesk Construction Cloud to provide a centralized location for distributing questions on any project file
  • Easily creating and sharing mark ups with individuals, teams or the entire office

Solution

SHM Architects and COINS developed a plan for the following:

1) Initial introduction of Revit LT to SHM's newly created 3D modeling design team

2) Engage with team leaders and work with SHM's management on a purchasing and training investment plan which ultimately added the full version of Revit and BIM Collaborate Pro licenses for use by their AutoCAD design teams

3) Create a phased migration schedule for their AutoCAD Architecture users to begin new projects in Revit with BIM 360 and the Autodesk Construction Cloud

Business outcome

Upon completion of the second and third phases, SHM Architects began to see benefits as their users provided real-time feedback to management which simplified business choices, created a prioritization of tasks to better align with their clients demands, and allowed design teams to create better project timeframes. The results were an increase in overall productivity.

Ultimately SHM Architects recognized a quantifiable return on investment while their designers enjoy quick and up-to-date access information on the evolving development on SHM's bespoke luxury homes.

Conclusion

"We started by adding Revit LT at first and gave our people training which we felt was a good initial investment," said Rita Ballard, SHM's Accounting Manager.

"The principals and team leaders quickly saw the benefits of Revit and BIM, so as we grew as a company, we onboarded designers with Revit experience and invested in Autodesk software, and we thank COINS for assisting us in our transition."
