HEAD/ TYROLIA develops new ski binding plate with Autodesk Moldflow and WESTCAM Datentechnik

Customer challenge

HEAD/ TYROLIA offers ski bindings “Made in Austria” for every type of rider, every terrain and every skiing ability. Today TYROLIA is the market leader in the alpine ski binding sector with numerous successes in the Alpine Ski World Cup, as well as the emerging freeski segment.

The company has developed a new binding-plate. The critical points of this project were the fact, that there was less time to go to market due to various reasons, and the challenging design:

4 other parts had to fit into this plate-design. If there were any modification on this plate-design, it would lead to modifications on these 4 parts, so a time delay and increased project costs would be the unwanted outcome.

Project goals

The goal was to develop a ski binding-plate with less weight as fast as possible. The overall design should not be affected by the modifications during the release of the binding-plate.

The material should remain the same as other plates to be save in terms of availability, material-costs and PIR-recycling, but the mould should not require too much service (cleaning ventilation etc.) to save costs at maintenance (tool department) and to accomplish the orders. Also, the injected plate should be as flat as possible and the warpage should be minimized or considered in CAD.

Solution

The Austria based company used Autodesk Moldflow simulations to optimize the injection-point. They tried to fill the mould as symmetric and with less pressure as possible and also optimize the time of the effective after-pressure to avoid sinking marks. This is very important to avoid flow lines in critical areas! 10 different injection points and a few CAD-modifications were simulated to get the best result. The warpage was also simulated and the design and the cooling-system of the mould were modified according to its result.

Business outcome

HEAD/TYROLIA started mass production after the 2nd injection-tests and saved a lot of costs and development time.

With the information about the position of flow-lines and air-traps not only the mechanical properties of the part were improved, but also the maintenance of the mould was reduced.

Conclusion

“Through the use of Autodesk Moldflow Simulation and with the help of our partner WESTCAM in terms of implementation, training and support, we reduced the time to market by around 15-20% and saved around 10-15% of development cost. Less maintenance of the moulds and a few seconds saved on the cycle time to reduce warpage will save money in the future.“, so Senior Employee Roland Eder, HTM Tyrolia.

Sustainable Design and Construction with BIM

Global demands are requiring the construction industry to be more focused on sustainable outcomes than ever before. To meet the needs of the future, innovative methods and the use of digital solutions are required. The EDGE East Side project in Berlin already shows what buildings of the future can look like. The high-rise office tower was planned with the aim of becoming one of the most sustainable building projects in Germany – from design to construction to operations. Local, Berlin-based architectural firm Aukett + Heese used Autodesk Revit and Autodesk BIM Collaborate Pro to deliver the project smoothly and meet the high demands. In addition, the experienced architects were able to demonstrate the enormous potential of BIM for taking sustainability aspects into account during planning.
