Fabrication at the Design Phase: Is Using Fabrication Tools a Better Way to Model for Designers?
Why continue to struggle with outdated design tools when a more efficient approach is within reach? Embracing fabrication tools—like Fabrication Parts in Revit software—P&ID Modeler for Revit allows engineers to focus on engineering rather than spending excessive time on modeling. By starting with fabrication, designers can model faster and seamlessly transfer design intent Mechanical systems that actually work! This “backward” process significantly enhances efficiency, enabling engineers to dedicate more time to engineering rather than laborious modeling. The approach also accelerates the design-to-construction workflow and proactively resolves MEP coordination challenges—even before trade partners are onboarded. As its adoption grows, this strategy is proving to be a game-changer for speeding up the engineering design process and optimizing project delivery.

You OdySea This—How BIM Shaped an Owner’s Vision into a Working Construction Model
Follow us on our journey as we work toward building an owner’s vision into one of the most inventive aquariums in the country. We will show how BIM engineers can successfully work with owners, architects, general contractors, and subcontractors during the preconstruction phase of any project in order to coordinate scheduling and procurement, reduce requests for information, improve construction sequencing, and much more. This couldn’t be possible if BIM Engineers didn't use multiple Autodesk, Inc., products, and we will demonstrate how these products’ interoperability enabled us to successfully coordinate with the entire Project Team from inception to completion. These products combined enabled us to create a construction model that was not only used for coordination of all trades, but was also used to generate constructability drawings for the field. Watch as we demonstrate how to successfully create these drawings, and we’ll also show how a unique collaborative process and Autodesk products can improve any project’s return on investments.

Benefits of Automating CER Reporting and Facilitating Software Patching
As Autodesk customers, we’ve all experienced the dreaded software crash and the magical customer error report (CER) reporting pop-up and asked ourselves, “should I send or just hit cancel?” This class will explore why CERs are important, and how reporting can be activated and automated through various methods to send information to Autodesk for evaluation. The session will also develop a software patching procedure and deployment plan using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), Autodesk Desktop App, or CAD Manager utility. Whether you’re a small mom-and-pop shop or a large global firm, we can demonstrate the paybacks of CER reporting and provide the metrics on the success of implementing such a program. We’ll show areas where issues are identified and look at possible solutions to rectify future product crashes. In our organization, we were able to reduce the number of crashes by a significant percentage while providing a better user experience.

What Is an AutoCAD® ACA/MEP AutoLISP® Guy Supposed to Do?
Let us face it. Every year, less and less of the data in AutoCAD MEP is exposed to AutoLISP. Even if some data may have been available in the last release of AutoCAD MEP, there is no guarantee that it will be exposed in the next version, especially when the DWG™ format changes. You may not feel comfortable replacing all your AutoLISP code with .NET code until there is a time where your company can afford a full rewrite of your code. So how do you bridge the gap between the data stored in AutoCAD MEP and the code you have written in AutoLISP? This class will take show you how you can write just enough .NET code to be dangerous, er, to be effective in exposing data which your AutoLISP applications need. We will use three different examples, based on the speaker's own need to access the data for AutoLISP applications. Programming skills are required for this class, although .NET experience is not a prerequisite.

Extending Virtual Design and Construction to Support Total Cost of Ownership
The U.S. design and construction industry is shifting toward single-source delivery approaches such as design-build and integrated project delivery (IPD). A fundamental feature that these delivery systems share is the participation of subcontractors in the early stages of the project. DPR Construction has invested heavily in the use of new technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and in development of expertise in collaborative delivery methods. We find that including owner's Operations and Maintenance Teams in IPD leads to better total-cost-of-ownership outcomes, providing an opportunity to make asset data flow from the project into asset management systems. This information, along with building-automation-system trend data, makes possible a more accurate picture of building system performance, thereby improving decision-making about energy spend, system maintenance, and repair. We will share DPR's experience working with owners who understand the business value of IPD in order to achieve breakthrough outcomes in whole-life management of projects and buildings.

I Spy with My Little Eye—Display Manager and the Mystery of Visibility
Who hasn’t had this situation—receiving data from a planning partner who’s also using AutoCAD Architecture software or AutoCAD MEP software and content that should be added doesn’t display. Or, content that is displayed doesn’t look like you expect, or doesn’t meet the firm’s graphical design standards. So, where should you start the modifications, and, more importantly, how do you apply them? The class will walk through how to navigate through the swamp of settings that are possible within the Display Manager, showcasing its possibilities and perks. We’ll explain an effective workflow when starting from scratch, or when dealing with data coming from an outside source who’s also working with AutoCAD Architecture and AutoCAD MEP, without losing what others might have defined.

A Couple of Guys and a BIM Computer
With many projects being vastly different from one another, it can be hard to figure out what exactly your BIM (Building Information Modeling) and virtual design and construction (VDC) needs will be for your project. AECOM Hunt has had the fortune to work on and coordinate many different projects. We have learned that, while perhaps similar, no 2 projects or teams are the same, and that each must be handled uniquely. During this course we will share our experiences on 4 projects: Little Caesars Arena, home of the Detroit Redwings; Aloft Magnificent Mile, Chicago; Mount Carmel Hospital, Grove City; and Kite Pharma-Cell Therapy. Other topics will include BIM (Building Information Modeling) stages such as coordination, completion, and turnover.

Creating Intelligent Details and Keynotes in AutoCAD Architecture

Everyone knows that AutoCAD Architecture software is a 3D program, and that it has intelligence when modeling. However, this intelligence is sometimes lost when creating details. In this session, we’ll show how to create intelligent details using detail components. In doing this, we’ll be able to keynote these elements to maintain a consistent noting procedure. We will then introduce how to modify the detail components. We will also show how to place all of the detail files on a sheet. If keynoting isn't your choice, we’ll also cover how to tag these elements so that there’s consistent notation of the details on every project.

BIG VDC, Small Projects: Adapt People, Process, and Tech for Small Projects
DPR Construction has the opportunity to work on some of the biggest projects across the globe. But rooted in the company's culture is a focus on applying excellence to projects of any scale. Small projects bring a set of challenges of their own: tight schedules, limited budget, thinly spread teams, and, most of the time, existing conditions. Virtual design and construction (VDC) can play a big role in delivering successful outcomes, but it takes the right mix of people, process, and technology. Join us for an engaging session where we'll walk through how DPR adapts to the unique challenges of smaller projects. We'll talk about the technology we almost always apply (spoiler: it's reality capture) and what tech we leave at home. And finally, we'll describe the type of person required to overcome small project challenges and how we go beyond collaboration with training, design support, and access to Autodesk tools.
