Thames Water and Stantec in the United Kingdom have developed an innovative methodology to build a long-term investment plan for London’s clean-water network, serving 8 million customers. This work defines how the future London water network should look like using hydraulic modeling and an optimization framework to identify the best value investment options. It handled extensive data from various sources. A strategic network model (InfoWorks WS Pro software) was prepared, incorporating current and future (25 years) supply-and-demand scenarios to identify needs. Optimatics Optimizer tested numerous solution combinations, calculating cost and hydraulic performance to develop the best value plan. This optimization process required the combined effort of Optimizer processing power, hydraulic modeler input, and stakeholder engagement to select and refine investment plans of interest. The session will provide an overview of the approach we took, and present the results and lessons from the above project.

Are engineering firms driving or impeding new technologies adoption?

There is increased focus on how Digital will disrupt the E&C sector. Most executives now understand that soon, engineers will not design, they will develop the algorithms that automate the design of solutions. According to the 2023 Deltek Clarity survey, ¾ of E&C participants worry that they will lose market share within 2 years if they fail to transform. Also, CAPEX is increasing in most sectors, therefore successful transformation is not only seen as a necessary mean to remain profitable, but also to increase capacity and gain market share. However, it is common for E&C firms to struggle in transforming leveraging Technologies. Usual "ways of working" such as focus on utilization rate, risk aversion and silos can impede a successful transformation. There would be merit in conducting a panel discussion with leaders from different horizons to discuss the above, focusing on the why, potential solutions and how they made meaningful progress happen while addressing these challenges.

Maximizing the Value of InfoWorks ICM: A Model-Driven Approach to CSO Reduction

Utilities managing combined sewer systems are increasingly challenged to reduce overflow events while controlling capital costs. This presentation highlights how the InfoWorks ICM hydraulic model was used as the foundation for advanced system optimization in the SUEZ SEVESC wastewater network in the western suburbs of Paris. The calibrated InfoWorks ICM model enabled detailed simulation of network performance across a range of storm events, forming the analytical backbone for decision-making. Building on this, Optimizer (by Optimatics) was integrated to systematically evaluate thousands of operational and infrastructure scenarios, including regulator settings, pump operations, and real-time control (RTC) strategies.

Real-Time Digital Twin with iWG/iCG and InfoWorks WS Pro and InfoWorks ICM: An Italian Water Utility Case Study

In this session, we will look at 3,300 kilometers of water supply networks serving 344,000 inhabitants, 155 district metered areas (DMAs), and more than 400 monitoring stations with one digital twin keeping it all together. Piave Servizi used Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) to enhance water supply operational efficiency by adopting iWG, a web platform by Idrostudi. Integrating InfoWorks WS PRO advanced modeling engine, iWG digital twin creates precise virtual replicas of water supply networks (WSNs), enabling simulations, what-if scenarios, and pressure analyses accessible to all operators, no modeling expertise required. By providing instant, data-driven insights, the iWG digital twin empowers water utilities to cope with daily challenges. And the journey continues: the iCG digital twin with InfoWorks ICM is bringing the same power to sewerage management.

A Tale of (Digital) Twin Cities. A Tale You'll Actually Want to Hear.

In this session, we're going to take you through the entire process of creating a digital twin for a wastewater treatment plant that's more than 80 years old. This will cover everything from laser scans of existing conditions to creating assets that show live data and allow scheduled maintenance and access to drawings and loop diagrams it. Let's explore how to set up Revit, Civil 3D, GIS, Autodesk Forma Data Management, Autodesk Forma Build, and Autodesk Tandem software to be used in far more ways than you may have considered. Learn with us how we create a management system that our future workforce wants to use.

Integration of BIM and Hydraulic Modeling into a Single Workflow

The development level of hydraulic modeling applications enables their use in various everyday situations in the water industry throughout the entire lifecycle of assets, not only in the design and specification stages. The development of information flows in each phase of asset life enables integration and interoperability between design applications (Civil 3D or InfraWorks software), geographic information systems (ArcGIS), and hydraulic modeling software (InfoWorks WS PRO software). This new dynamic enhances the use of these tools together, extracting the best result as quickly and accurately as possible, both in the design phase and also during operations and maintenance. In this session, we'll go through studies of network pathways, sizing, depth, clash detection, documentation, calibration, operational rules, and more, using the best application for each step with the smoothest interoperability.
