In this talk, we'll look at how pairing parametric modeling with 3D printing enables users to iterate faster than ever before and build fully functional prototypes. Lastly, we'll explore how 3D printing's "slicer" software is quietly one of the biggest drivers of the technology.

The rise of consumer-level 3D printing brings many opportunities and some challenges. 3D printing can produce functional parts, but limitations of the technology mean that designers must account for these constraints early in the design process. In this class we will spend some time understanding exactly how these printers work, with a particular emphasis on how a 3D design is translated into actual toolpaths. Based on this, we will be able to understand how to manage particular issues that affect printability and strength of parts, such as overhangs, wall thickness, filament orientation, and so on. Designers will be able to successfully create parts that are both functional and good-looking. The class will include an overview of relevant software tools from Autodesk, Inc., and other companies. In addition to these topics, the 2014 session will address developments in consumer 3D printing, including new printing technologies, soluble support materials, and articulated joints.

This instructional demo will show you how to take your ideas to reality through the use of design in Fusion 360 software, and how to utilize 3D printing to manufacture your idea. 3D printing (or additive manufacturing) is a great technology not only for prototyping, but also for all the way through to end-use components in industry. 3D printing is now easily affordable for the everyday user, and it can be difficult to know where to start. This talk will show you how to get started with Fusion 360, introduce some different types of 3D printing with the focus on fused filament fabrication (FFF), then go on to cover some common mistakes when using 3D-printing technology and how to avoid them.

3D printing has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost everything; yet materials currently being used are neither environmentally sustainable nor optimized for the 3D-printing process. Applied to large-scale structures, 3D printing is becoming a topic of growing interest in large part because of the urgent need to increase both productivity and safety on construction sites. Part of the appeal of the 3D printing of large-scale structures is that it offers the opportunity to robotically automate construction in extreme or hostile environments. The race to print buildings in three dimensions is intensifying globally. However, while the extrusive material of choice for most investigative researchers is currently concrete, the concrete industry is one of the largest contributors to human-produced CO2 emissions worldwide. This roundtable will discuss the environmental and technical opportunities and concerns related to concrete 3D printing, and alternative approaches.

This course will describe the advantages and challenges of using 3D printing for shoe manufacturing. It will include how OESH Shoes is using a special 3D printing process for production manufacturing. Key to the process is a pellet-based extruding 3D printer that is specifically designed for extruding elastomeric materials suitable for shoe components. The printer prints directly from readily available thermoplastic pellets rather than from filament, and enables us to use blowing agents in both chemical and physical form as well as microcellular expanding agents to produce cellular and foamed materials that are particularly suitable for shoe soles. We have a bank of these 3D printers all operating simultaneously, each printer producing its own made-to-order pair of shoes or components. This process enables us to offer a much broader range of styles and sizes than is achievable with traditional manufacturing, and it will enable us to produce customized shoes. In this class, we discuss why designers, engineers, and manufacturers need to think of 3D printing and computer numerical control (CNC) machining technologies as an and rather than an or proposition. Today more and more designers and engineers understand the value of 3D printing. However, CNC is often a faster, more cost-effective solution for rapid and functional prototyping.

3D printing has become increasingly popular on construction sites, allowing firms to facilitate the construction process and decrease carbon footprint. It's a challenging exercise, due to the size of elements and the fact that they can't be reinforced, nor can the finishes be easily achieved. In order to democratize 3D printing, the decision was made to tackle the problem differently. The creation of 3D-parametric-printed formworks, urban furniture, or complex beam nodes/intersection is automated. This enables the reduction of production time and costs, as these elements can be produced in an infinite quantity and easily mounted on site. It also enables carbon footprint reduction by getting rid of wooden formworks and trucks for concrete pouring, and reducing the waste and time involved in creating those elements. The use of parametric elements to create these objects allows a full customization and replication. A deployment kit has been created for their subcontractors. Our company, ACCIONA, has been committed since its 1862 founding to pushing forward innovation in order to develop nontraditional ways to solve problems, and to always looking for new business and new initiatives. That is the main reason why, 3 years ago, ACCIONA's Innovation Division started to work in 2 different technologies: reality capture, looking to transform the real world into a digital world; and large-scale 3D printing, aimed at creating new 3D-printed elements from CAD digital files. Both technologies were especially interesting for preserving our cultural heritage. In order to probe both worlds-physical and digital are interconnected due to both technologies-in ACCIONA, we decided to start a pilot project that let us capture an existing structure (like a sculpture or a part of a building) using reality capture technology, and then 3D print a replica using concrete large-scale 3D-printing technology.

This class will cover a Reality Computing Solution that uses the combination of AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Revit software, and Inventor software as a bridge between realty capture and 3D printing. We will also cover the way that this technology changes how projects are communicated and built. There is a big movement happening in the construction industry for the use of these models on projects in initial planning and as a submittal requirement.
