Custom 3D Views When You Need Them with Autodesk BIM Collaborate

Construction jobsites are complicated places. There are several moving parts and unforeseeable challenges at any given time. Project leaders must be skilled at absorbing new information and making informed decisions quickly. 

Our research with FMI found that 75% of construction professionals expressed a strong demand for rapid decision-making in the field. Achieving that, however, is challenging with the sheer amount of data produced in an increasingly digitized industry. Studies show the volume of project data has doubled in the last three years, so getting useable insights from all that information has become increasingly difficult—especially when you’re working in a fast-paced jobsite environment.  

Leaders in the field and behind a desk must be able to zero in on the right information at the appropriate time in order to keep projects moving. Increasingly, teams are relying on the 3D model as a way of understanding work that needs to get done. But if not set up correctly, these models can overwhelm teams with too much information. 

Superintendents, project engineers, and BIM managers would greatly benefit from having smaller, more consumable models to reference the floor, room, or discipline they’re working on. The good news is, there are several ways of doing this today. Depending on the requirements, teams can use the following methods: 

  • Revit for model breakdown in the earlier design phases or upon request. This is usually done with a well defined BIM execution plan. 
  • Navisworks for adding, moving, and managing selection and search sets. Navisworks finds the most detailed and relevant data. 
  • Third-party integrations for extracting and surfacing specific information from the model.  

But today, we’re excited to share a new capability that allows teams to break down models in BIM Collaborate using the properties inherent in the model. 

Using BIM Collaborate for model breakdowns 

BIM Collaborate now enables BIM managers to segment models by properties such as levels, phases, rooms, object categories, and disciplines during the coordination phase or when they’re ready to create a sign-off model.  

VDC teams can also create Custom properties for groups of properties commonly used together. For example, they can set up views for a specific room or a mix of mechanical, electrical, structural, etc. Plus, these views can be used to filter clash results.  

But what’s even more exciting, BIM managers now can join our open beta to publish views directly from Model Coordination to folders in Docs, that can be assigned to teams onsite and accessed on mobile. 

Helping teams focus to improve efficiency 

Breaking down models into their constituent parts empowers teams to solve problems faster because there’s less noise and distractions. Folks on site can get the exact information they require without getting overwhelmed or wasting time sifting through irrelevant data.  

Installation details like materials, measurements, and placement are at their disposal, and files are available in their mobile viewer. This helps teams on the jobsite be more efficient.  

Since the model is focused on the work they’re doing, they don’t have to navigate the full project model. BIM managers can easily produce and publish models at the request of Project Engineers or Superintendents. In turn, this improves the communication between these key decision makers. Teams can then zero in on the work at hand and accomplish their objectives for the day.

Studies show that over 95% of all data captured in the AEC industry goes unused. New capabilities within BIM Collaborate help address this issue by surfacing the necessary information to the right people so they can put model data to good use.  

Easy model breakdowns and a direct method for publishing to the field promotes better decision making and helps to reduce project delays. When teams working onsite have just the information they need, and less of what they don’t, they’re able to work more efficiently with greater focus and reliance on the customized view on their mobile device.
