Alias software is not just a tool for surface modeling. It is far beyond that: it is supposed to be the designers' playground. You can sketch 2D, model 3D, sketch 3D, and communicate with digital sculptors on one model, one platform. This class will explain how.

We want to illustrate the newest version of Alias software to show you how you can best utilize the latest updates in your workflow. There are some key enhancements that we don't want you to miss and good old refinements that just make your daily life easier.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation began using AutoCAD Civil 3D software with the 2010 release. Since that time, more of their internal users have switched over, and they have switched platforms to 2012, 2014, and soon, to 2016. As their use and their user base have grown, many lessons have been learned that have affected how they have moved forward. Specifically, these come from the development of standard concepts for use of AutoCAD Civil 3D software and how those concepts are put into practice in their project workflows.

Through lessons learned on 2 large projects (an airport expansion and a courthouse renovation), come learn how critical it is to properly prepare MEFP (mechanical, electrical, fire, plumbing) models for the Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie) deliverables. Come learn workflows, tips, and tricks every firm should know. Students will learn how to set up Revit software MEPF models for an efficient COBie deliverable workflow. The lesson will include reviewing importance of architectural model setup, what to watch for and how to fix it, how to match Arch rooms / MEPF spaces quickly, how to easily create unique naming conventions, and how to address equipment without room assignments. The students will learn how to use Revit software’s COBie Extension (COBie Toolkit) effectively to COBie-ize the models for the best data exports. Also, you’ll understand when and how to append COBie files for the client deliverable. This session features Revit.

Intended for intermediate to advanced AutoCAD Civil 3D users, this class is designed to show land development professionals workflows for brokering data between AutoCAD Civil 3D software and Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) for the creation of detailed floodplain analysis. Using terrain data from both LiDAR and grading objects, this class will demonstrate how 1D and 2D hydraulic floodplain simulations can be quickly created from AutoCAD Civil 3D designs. With DEM terrain aggregation and geometric editing functionalities recently added in the newest releases of HEC-RAS version 5.0.7 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this class will focus on techniques and nuances for setting up your HEC-RAS model and getting simulated results back into AutoCAD Civil 3D for the creation of detailed work maps. Utilizing only AutoCAD Civil 3D and open-source programs, this class will demonstrate how to successfully integrate HEC-RAS simulations with AutoCAD Civil 3D.

These tips include automating regular tasks, using standard functions in new ways, exploring underutilized features, and even exploiting a handful of undocumented commands. With over $1 billion worth of work planned over the next 5 years plus the possibility of permission being granted for the construction of a second runway, it is essential that Gatwick Airport has access to up-to-date, accurate information with regards to the critical infrastructure that keeps the airport operational. This class aims to describe the existing systems that were in place, along with the issues that have arisen as a result of having incorrect geospatial data on buried utilities. We will then describe how we realized the solution to this problem using AIMS Technology, which we will host in a cloud environment utilizing mobile tools in the field to view and update incorrect data. We will also describe how we could use the power of the crowd to perform mass updates on these data sets and the enhancements we have planned to support the airport operation, linking it to third-party systems such as Maximo and making it an integral part of our resilience planning.

This class will show enhancements for Autodesk’s Structural Precast Extension for Revit software from the German-based company IDAT. You’ll see how easily you can tag the precast assemblies. Learn a new way to create parametric reinforcement definitions inside a Revit family. With the click of a button, create real Revit reinforcement out of this definition. Create and control custom fabric sheets easily. Automate and define connections for columns, beams, and foundations with own families. For each precast element, different shop drawings can be configured and automatically created. For example, a wall can have a shop drawing for the panel itself, one for the reinforcement, and one for the electrical system. With additional programs, define the stacks for the transportation of the elements and the layout of the production tables in the factory. You’ll see how these enhancements speed up the creation of precast elements with Revit.

Having clear 3D visualization methods of the subsurface geology layers is vital for clients and the wider construction team to better understand the ground conditions and risks. In this class, you'll learn how to use the new Geotechnical Module 2018 Fence Diagram tool to create clear 3D visualizations of the subsurface layers, together with additional methods beyond the current capabilities of the Geotechnical Module to visualize other types of downhole data, such as, water levels, strength parameters, or contamination in AutoCAD Civil 3D software. The class will teach the steps and workflows required to create Fence Diagrams and cover, considerations on the classification of strata, techniques to update and edit the fence diagrams, and the workflow to share the visualizations with InfraWorks software. The class will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of sharing fence diagrams and when you would share them in preference of geotechnical surfaces.

You can address AutoCAD Civil 3D software project visualization in several different ways, depending on the project needs. You can achieve full photorealistic visualization by exporting data to 3ds Max software. You can also achieve a more dynamically adjustable, yet still impressive, visualization through InfraWorks software, and you can provide faster access to different project options. Navisworks software can provide a more utilitarian option, focusing on project construction analysis and presentation. In this class you will learn how to prepare Civil 3D Data for use in InfraWorks, and InfraWorks Data in Civil 3D. You will learn what Objects translate between each program, and what does not. You will also learn how to get a Civil 3D corridor into InfraWorks for use in your Model.

Survey data is an important part of every infrastructure project. From field collection and remote sensing to establish the project’s existing-conditions base plan, all the way through to settings out of the designed features and the automated grading of the finished surfaces. In this class, we will take a deep dive into the new and existing survey features and functionality in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 software. We will cover traditional, global navigation satellite system (GNSS), scanned, photographed, and remote-sensing data types, and we’ll see how they’re added and used in both AutoCAD Civil 3D software and InfraWorks 360 software. Then we will dive deeper into open and closed loop adjustments, “on the fly” local to assumed coordinate-system transformations, grid-to-ground considerations, extreme description key coding, extended data on points and figures, and Land XML-based survey systems. And finally, to keep up with the latest trends, we will explore the power of photo-to-point-cloud tools, and see how settings out information works in the BIM 360 mobile applications. This class will explore the new road rehab tools in Civil 3D software, and show how you can use them to reduce milling, reduce material costs, and produce a smoother final road surface. Adding vehicles to any large-scale highway or roadway visualization animations can be a daunting and laborious task. Representing accurate traffic patterns and vehicle movements would often be impossible without hand-animating hundreds or thousands of cars (not usually a viable solution). Using VISSIM traffic data and 3ds Max Civil View extension, it’s possible to automate much of the process, as well as to have an accurate and visually correct simulation that’s easy to update as changes to the model or traffic data occur. This class will cover the basic steps of integrating the traffic data; provide some tips and tricks for the vehicles; and pass on efficient workflows for animating, rendering, and revising during the lifecycle of a project.
