RENEWABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS AUSTRALIA (RESA): A NEW WAY TO HARNESS THE WIND
Silent, sustainable, superior wind turbines
RESOLVING OPPOSITION TO WIND TURBINES
Although wind is a virtually inexhaustible source of renewable power, wind turbines themselves can be loud and environmentally unfriendly.
THE DESIGN SOLUTION
WHISPER-QUIET WIND POWER
RESA developed the Eco Whisper Turbine to minimize noise and impact on birds.
"The Eco Whisper Turbine is virtually silent and has really changed people’s perceptions towards wind turbines in general."
— Michael Le Messurier, Principal Commercial Manager
Wind power's NIMBY issue
Fossil fuels are unsustainable in the long run, but wind power as a source of energy is often controversial. The giant turbines that harness wind tend to be loud and occasionally generate vibrations that can be felt nearby. In addition, they can pose a serious hazard to local bird life. As a result, most wind farms are located in lightly populated areas, far from the infrastructure they power. To continue to scale, wind power companies have to overcome the NIMBY problem.
HOW IT WORKS
The Eco Whisper Turbine follows the wind, turning so it always faces forward.
With 30 blades rather than the standard two or three, even a light breeze starts it spinning.
A ring around the tip of the blades cuts the noise of the turbine's spin.
The Eco Whisper generates up to 30 percent more power than conventional turbine designs.
As a child, Michael Le Messurier would sit for hours watching planes taking off and land. It was this fascination with the wind together with his passion for renewable energy that inspired him to get involved in the development of the Eco Whisper Turbine.
Le Messurier sees a future in which every house or commercial enterprise has some form of renewable energy. He recognizes the limitations of using fossil fuels and sees the solution as a cumulative collaboration using different renewables where appropriate.
Q & A
Why is the Eco Whisper Turbine revolutionary?
It's designed to be quiet and high-efficiency so it can generate more energy with less environmental impact.
How did RESA develop it?
RESA worked with the ICN (Industry Capability Network) and Commercialisation Australia as well as Geelong-based manufacturer Austeng, using Autodesk software to streamline collaboration among them.
LEARN MORE ABOUT RESA
RESA owns, designs, develops, manufactures, installs and maintains two versions of the Eco Whisper Turbine for communities and industries in Australasia. Winner of the 2012 Queensland Premier's Sustainability Award in the Innovation in Technology Category, the company is committed to supporting Australia's renewable energy target of 20 percent by 2020 and helping developing nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the Kyoto protocol.
The Eco Whisper Turbine 650 is rated at 20 kW and provides a commercial volume of energy to industry, manufacturing, commercial and remote users. The Eco Whisper Turbine 325, now being developed, is a 5 kW model suitable for smaller or residential users.
