BOMBORA WAVE POWER: A FRESH APPROACH TO RENEWABLE ENERGY
Clean energy that actively improves the environment
PROVIDING CLEAN ENERGY, AND MORE
Most renewable energy companies focus solely on finding ways of producing energy from renewable sources.
THE DESIGN SOLUTION
SAFE WAVE POWER THAT ENHANCES ITS SURROUNDINGS
Bombora developed a wave power system that not only harvests energy from the ocean, but provides homes for marine life and recreation for humans.
"Our biggest breakthrough was when we realized we could put air underwater and use it to generate power."
— Shawn Ryan, Director
Harnessing wave power harmlessly
In the quest to find clean, sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, companies are still looking for viable ways to harness the power of the ocean. The waves that break endlessly on shores around the world could become an inexhaustible source of electricity. But finding a way to harness them and feed their energy back into the power grid is challenging — as is minimizing the impact of a renewable energy system on the sea's delicate ecosystems.
HOW IT WORKS
A giant air bubble is anchored to the ocean floor within an artificial reef similar to a series of giant foot pumps.
When a wave goes over the reef, it forces the air through a series of valves and past an air turbine which spins, generating electricity.
The wave trough passing over the reef forces the air back to its original position so the cycle can repeat.
The artificial reef also provides new homes for marine life, creating new places for people to snorkel and dive.
Brothers Glen and Shawn Ryan, both experienced engineers, are also avid kayakers and white water rafters. They recognized waves as a source of renewable energy, but they wanted to do more than simply generate electricity. After creating prototypes for a wave power system, they put massive collaboration into practice, approaching some of the leading names in wave energy to crowdsource its development process. Bombora tested its prototypes in specialized tanks at The Australian Maritime College in Tasmania and has run several student programs with the college.
