<\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe sight inspired them to put their product design training to work, turning discarded plastics into new, functional products. Armed with design skills and determination, the pair began collecting scrap motors and steel from junkyards, building their\u00a0first recycling machines\u2014a shredder and a small extruder\u2014by hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have a way\u00a0to process\u00a0the recycled material into its new form, so they had to improvise.\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>We grabbed a big hole saw and drilled a hole in a piece of aluminum. That was our first mold,\u201d\u00a0Lammering\u00a0says with a laugh. Those early molds produced simple coasters and keychains, which were the early foundations for what would become Limpi\u2019s product line<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n A short YouTube video of their work went viral, drawing local media and community interest. Media coverage and market demand quickly followed.\u00a0Today, Limpi\u2019s portfolio includes designing custom machinery, building site-specific work for well-known hospitality companies like Marriott, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n As Limpi\u2019s designs became more complex, so did the need for tighter precision. The team began designing molds digitally, moving from SolidWorks to Autodesk Fusion<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0moved over to Fusion\u00a0because\u00a0it has\u00a0CAD and\u00a0CAM software\u00a0available\u00a0in\u00a0one seamless platform, which we really like,\u201d\u00a0Lammering\u00a0explains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n The integrated CAD\/CAM features<\/a> enabled\u00a0Lammering\u00a0to machine molds on their CNC setup without exporting between programs\u2014streamlining an otherwise fragmented workflow.\u00a0\u201cI do most of the\u00a0design\u00a0on one computer, then I walk right across the shop to my\u00a0CNC machine\u00a0and keep\u00a0the process\u00a0going\u00a0from there\u00a0without fumbling through files or wasting any time,\u201d\u00a0Lammering\u00a0notes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Limpi used Fusion to design and manufacture custom aluminum molds for injection and casting\u2014each one improving their understanding of radii, draft angles, and plastic flow. \u201cYou have to try it out, put the mold back in the machine, try it out again, make some changes\u2014every part we made was a new learning curve,\u201d Lammering says. Limpi advanced from 2D engravings to fully 3D designs, introducing complex forms, smooth patterns, and precise fit for injection molds while giving their recycled products new depth and polish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n After one grueling order of 2,500 keychains\u00a0was\u00a0made entirely\u00a0using\u00a0the manual injection device, the team used Fusion to design their first hydraulic injection machine.\u00a0\u201cWe were\u00a0literally\u00a0standing\u00a0on\u00a0the manual machine to\u00a0apply the right level of pressure and\u00a0inject plastic. After that,\u00a0we\u00a0said,\u00a0‘never again,\u2019\u00a0and designed a hydraulic one in Fusion,\u201d\u00a0says Lammering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n That machine, still in use today,\u00a0introduced adjustable pressure and\u00a0consistency that manual machines\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0match,\u00a0marking\u00a0a turning point in Limpi\u2019s production capability and consistency while\u00a0laying\u00a0the foundation for scaling production.<\/p>\n\n\n Limpi eventually outgrew its\u00a0backyard\u00a0workspace. Piles of shredded plastic and expanding machinery filled every corner until the team\u00a0migrated\u00a0to\u00a0their new\u00a0home\u00a0inside Cura\u00e7ao\u2019s\u00a0Sambil\u00a0Mall<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cNow we\u00a0have a\u00a0500-square-meter facility in\u00a0the\u00a0mall, so people can see through the window\u00a0and see exactly\u00a0what we\u2019re doing all day,\u201d\u00a0Lammering\u00a0says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n The new space not only improved working conditions (thanks to air conditioning and ample room) but also brought the public directly into the process.\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0hardest\u00a0part for us when telling our story is getting people to\u00a0truly understand\u00a0the scale of what we\u00a0do. If we just tell them, they simply nod their heads.\u00a0Having them here shows a whole different picture of what it\u00a0actually takes\u00a0and what we can do with that plastic bottle they just threw away,\u201d\u00a0Lammering\u00a0says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Visitors now watch the full recycling process\u2014shredding, melting, molding\u2014and often leave with a product made from waste collected on local beaches.\u00a0\u201cThe public engagement\u00a0is just as valuable as the production itself,\u201d\u00a0Lammering\u00a0notes.<\/p>\n\n\n When the local Marriott resort<\/a> sought eco-friendly art for its guest rooms, Limpi delivered.\u00a0\u201cWe created\u00a0wall\u00a0art out of ocean waste\u2014fish, turtles, and starfish\u00a0that were\u00a0lit\u00a0up\u00a0from behind\u2014and\u00a0Marriott\u00a0ordered over 400 pieces,\u201d\u00a0Lammering\u00a0says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Each design begins\u00a0as a 2D sketch.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0up to me to take those sketches and create the 3D design in Fusion,\u201d says Lammering. \u201cWe then send the digital concept off to our\u00a0customer\u00a0to see if they like the product.\u00a0We\u2019ll\u00a0often even 3D print the concept model before we begin making the actual mold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The entire process only\u00a0lasts a matter of days, not weeks, allowing Limpi to quickly deliver recycled products to meet customer needs.\u00a0\u201cOne time we did it all in two days! From confirming the concept, to designing\u00a0and creating the\u00a0mold, all the way through to completing our production run. It can be\u00a0very fast,\u201d\u00a0Lammering\u00a0adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n Limpi also plays\u00a0a central role\u00a0in the\u00a0Future Goals<\/a>\u00a0program, a partnership between the\u00a0Sandals Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Ajax\u00a0Football\u00a0Club<\/a> that turns recycled plastic into soccer goals\u00a0and other accessories\u00a0for primary schools in the Caribbean.\u00a0Sandals sponsored and supplied the first machine for goalpost creation with\u00a0Limpi as the production partner. The program aims to enrich the education and development of youth across\u00a0Cura\u00e7ao and beyond.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Future Goals program\u00a0alone\u00a0has recycled around\u00a06,500 pounds\u00a0of plastic (that\u2019s around\u00a01.5 million bottle caps) and produced over 70 goalposts for schools,\u201d\u00a0Lammering\u00a0reports.\u00a0The project\u2019s success has inspired expansion to Jamaica and other islands, supported by sponsors and local governments. Each goal, frame, and trophy serves not just as a recycled product but as a lesson in sustainability and design.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Limpi has evolved from a small experiment into a regional model for sustainable manufacturing\u00a0and will continue\u00a0refining its machines, molds, and mission.\u00a0Looking ahead, the company aims to replicate its recycling model across the Caribbean, starting with Aruba, Bonaire, and St. Martin.\u00a0\u201cOur future vision is to take the same system and machines we created and replicate them on other islands.
