Today we’re going to explore an extremely powerful capabilities – editing features in the Fusion timeline. This approach allows you to make changes to your design without starting over, giving you flexibility and control as your ideas evolve.

Why the timeline matters

The timeline in Fusion records every step you take, from sketches to features, in the order they were created. This means you can “go back in time” and adjust earlier decisions while keeping your model parametric and fully adaptable.

Activate the right component

Before editing features in the Fusion timeline, confirm the component you want to modify is active. In the Browser, check for the radio button next to the component name. If it’s not active, right-click and select Activate Component.

Edit an existing sketch

Need to add detail or texture? Simply double-click the original sketch in the timeline or right-click and choose Edit Sketch. For example, you might add small circles near an edge to create grooves or ridges for better grip. Use precise dimensions to keep everything constrained and predictable.

Speed up with patterns

Instead of duplicating shapes manually, use Rectangular Pattern from the Create menu. Select your object, set the extent distance and quantity, and click OK. Patterns save time and ensure consistent spacing across your design.

Update features without rebuilding

After editing a sketch, update related features like Revolve or Extrude. Right-click the feature in the timeline and select Edit Feature. Fusion will preview changes instantly, allowing you to include or exclude profiles as needed.

Harness the power of parametric modeling

Parametric modeling means your design adapts automatically when dimensions change. For example, if you reduce a diameter, associated grooves or holes move with it because they’re dimensioned relative to key geometry. This flexibility is what makes Fusion ideal for iterative design.

Show dimensions for quick adjustments

Want an even faster way to tweak sizes? Turn on dimensions directly in the 3D view:

Expand the Sketches folder under your component.

Click the eyeball icon next to the sketch.

Right-click and select Show Dimension.

Now you can double-click dimensions and update them instantly without opening the sketch editor. When finished, hide the sketch and save your work.

Editing features in the Fusion timeline and leveraging parametric updates give you complete control over your design process. You can refine details, adapt to new requirements, and experiment—all without starting over.

Ready to take your designs further? Explore patterns, dimensions, and timeline edits to see how easily your model responds. The more you practice, the more intuitive these tools become, and the faster your ideas move from concept to reality.

Keep your eyes out for next part in the series – Designing a bail component and some advanced modeling tips.

Learn how to edit features in the Fusion timeline, use patterns, and apply parametric updates for flexible, efficient 3D modeling.
