The machine’s structure was designed entirely using Autodesk’s Generative Design suite, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing to quickly generate a wide range of design alternatives based on parameters, such as material, manufacturing method and performance requirements.

“When generative design is further coupled with established parametric design methods, where the dimensions between critical components can be defined by dynamic relationships, entirely new machines, with varying dimensions and performance characteristics can be generated in the click of a button, at least that’s the idea. Imagine just defining the required build volume, updating the parametric base configuration, and automatically ‘regenerating’ an optimised machine to these new dimensions – It’s not difficult to see the concept of ‘self-designing’ products and machines begin to emerge, and we can do it all in Fusion” Ric Real, PhD – co-founder at Generative Machine.

This beta version of the 5-axis printer was not only fully designed in Autodesk Fusion, but the company has also used Fusion to prototype some 3D printed metal components with post-processing CNC workflows to maintain tolerance and the critical alignment between axes.

“On the electronics front, the company is using Duet3D’s ecosystem for motion control, delivering high-precision parts with closed-loop control integration. Duet3D’s control boards along with RepRap firmware allow for incredible flexibility when it comes to configuring the machine, being one of the few setups that is suitable for a 5-axis FFF printer. By pairing the control board with a single board computer, additional plugins can be written which will extend the capabilities of this platform further. Designing the electronics enclosure using Fusions sheet metal tools; and exploring the design of custom PCB’s using Fusions Electronics make Fusion a powerful tool for the whole design process.” Andrew Everitt, co-founder.

Currently, most desktop FFF 3D printers are limited to 3 axes, restricting the geometry and complexity of the parts they can produce. However, by enabling users to overcome these obstacles, Generative Machine aims to make this technology more accessible to a wider audience.

Keep your eyes peeled for more developments on this project!
