Now, starting to see the beginning of another significant shift: metal 3D-printed watches. This disrupted the industry, marking a major change in traditional watch-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The introduction of CAD and CAM in later decades paved the way for watchmakers to produce mechanical watches again with greater precision and consistency, leading to higher quality, greater customization, and more reliable wristwatches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-04-at-4.24.09\u202fPM-1024x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-04-at-4.24.09\u202fPM-1024x533.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-04-at-4.24.09\u202fPM-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-04-at-4.24.09\u202fPM-768x400.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-04-at-4.24.09\u202fPM-1536x800.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-04-at-4.24.09\u202fPM.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with all of the technological advancements that have occurred since then, the most common way to manufacture watch cases has been with subtractive processes, CNC\u2019d out of a block of 316L stainless steel (or 904L if you\u2019re really fancy). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apiar, on the other hand, uses additive manufacturing to 3D print their watch case using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/metal-powder-bed-fusion-and-its-standing-for-design-manufacturing-companies\/\">Laser Powder Bed Fusion<\/a> from Grade 23 titanium powder, allowing them to push the boundaries of what\u2019s possible.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bringing-metal-3d-printing-to-watch-design\">Bringing metal 3D printing to watch design<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>According to Apiar, the process, &#8220;harnesses the energy from high-powered lasers to selectively melt metal powder. Best conceptualized as forming from the powder a single &#8216;slice&#8217; or layer (each merely 0.06mm in thickness) of a larger 3D part. This has never been done in the watch industry until now. Every aspect of the watch (excluding the movement) has been meticulously designed, rendered, and documented in their respective workspaces. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/manufacturing-extension?term=1-YEAR&amp;tab=subscription\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Additive Build Simulation<\/a> was used to set up the printing process for a near-net case shape print. CAM toolpaths were then created for case post-processing as well as dial manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1080 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1080\" controls src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Fusion-Design.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a small independent watchmaker, Apiar also prides itself on manufacturing as much as it can locally.
