A behind-the-scenes look at how Guinn Partners has launched over 50 consumer products, including one that has surpassed $75 million in sales, using Autodesk Fusion.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2017 by serial entrepreneur Colin Guinn with partners Oren Schauble and Craig Nehrkorn, Guinn Partners<\/a> isn\u2019t focused solely on engineering or design. They offer full, end-to-end services for consumer product development<\/a>, and they can work with just about anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe interface with everyone, from dreamers to inventors, startups, and large corporations,” says Eric Davis, director of product, Guinn Partners. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter where anyone is in their product development cycle\u2014whether it\u2019s just an idea scribbled down on a napkin or almost fully complete and ready for mass production and sales and marketing, Guinn Partners specializes in developing products that are both very profitable for our clients and optimized for a greater user experience to give it the greatest chance in the market.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past six years, Guinn Partners has helped to launch over 50 projects. From one-off functional prototypes to consumer electronics, robotics, and more, the firm does it all with a\u00a0rapid iteration process. The company designed and launched the toy company Gel Blaster<\/a>, which\u00a0reached $75 million in sales by its third year in business. They\u2019ve also worked with LIFT Aircraft<\/a> and the\u00a0development of personal aviation. From the beginning, they\u2019ve used Autodesk Fusion<\/a> to power\u00a0their growth and bring product visions to life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An inside look at Guinn Partners\u2019s consumer product development process\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

A good majority of Guinn Partners\u2019s projects start in the concept phase\u2014no collateral, no CAD,\u00a0and not even a requirements or definition document. \u201cThe customers want to see us build this\u00a0crazy, never-before-done idea and bring it into the physical world,\u201d says Mitchell Richburg,\u00a0mechanical engineer, Guinn Partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guinn Partners helps their entrepreneurial customers work within tight timelines and budgets.\u00a0During a kick-off meeting, a project manager, technical lead, engineers, and a product manager are determined along with the scope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Fusion, the team immediately moves\u00a0into mechanical and\/or electronics design and integration to iterate and produce prototypes\u00a0quickly. Along with a 5-axis CNC machine<\/a>, laser bed, and water jet for more complex jobs, the\u00a0shop is set up with around 15 3D printers at any given time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe may have a team of five or six engineers working on up to 12 projects simultaneously,” says Nicholas LaMour, department head and mechanical engineer at Guinn Partners. “The\u00a0ability to switch hats and manage all of that seamlessly on a cloud-based platform is very useful\u00a0to us. We may also be in different locations, whether it\u2019s at the office or with a customer. The\u00a0ability to just pick up your workstation and run with Autodesk Fusion while still maintaining that\u00a0collaborative nature\u2014particularly on the mechanical side\u2014is remarkably helpful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDesigning on the fly\u201d with Autodesk Fusion\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

According to LaMour,\u00a0Fusion lends itself towards essentially \u201cdesigning on the fly.\u201d \u201cA lot of what we do has\u00a0never been done before,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re not iterating on something that already exists and looking for a 2% improvement. Not being tied down to have a fully parameterized model and all the documentation structure in place is something that we really enjoy about Fusion.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team performs rapid prototyping<\/a> to produce and learn as much as possible,\u00a0iterate, and then do it all over again. Often, they will complete 4-6 prototypes for a single\u00a0project.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe thing I enjoy most about Fusion is that it actually lends itself very well to what we\u00a0specialize in, which is iterative development,\u201d LaMour says. \u201cThe file management system, the\u00a0security, the ability to pass files with ease between teammates while still maintaining control is\u00a0very, very convenient.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI really like how we can use Autodesk Fusion for sharing. It\u2019s super easy to collaborate, and we can give each other the help we need. File management and revision history in Fusion are critical to their success with multiple\u00a0projects, engineers, and stakeholders. \u201cI don\u2019t have to worry about sending my co-workers a\u00a0messed-up file that they can\u2019t open properly,\u201d Richburg says. \u201cIf I ever received one more\u00a0\u2018reference files are missing\u2019 code error in Solidworks, I\u2019d lose it.
