For the past eight years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victoriahandproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Victoria Hand Project<\/a> has worked to deliver a viable solution with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/solutions\/fff-fdm-3d-printing-software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3D-printed<\/a>, customized prosthetic hands, sockets, and arm limbs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We develop the technology and workflows, and we then partner with clinicians in communities or areas where access to prosthetic care is difficult,\u201d says Michael Peirone, CEO, Victoria Hand Project. \u201cWe provide training and equipment to people on the ground so they can produce the prosthetics themselves. We say it\u2019s like teaching someone how to fish. This year, they expanded to Ukraine to help those injured during the war. Two sites are already operating in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are soldiers and civilians who are unable to obtain prosthetics due to demand and the disruption of the prosthetic networks in the country,\u201d Peirone says. \u201cThey needed a solution that could be made in the country since factories and availability for local components have been destroyed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"empowering-clinicians\">Empowering clinicians<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Victoria Hand Project provided its software application powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/free-trial?mktvar002=4333583001|ORG|&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=other&amp;utm_campaign=4333583dmblogf360&amp;utm_id=4333583001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Autodesk Fusion<\/a> (donated through Autodesk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/sustainability\/technology-impact-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Technology Impact Program<\/a>) and eight 3D printers to begin work in Ukraine. With training and just this small amount of technology, clinicians can now produce custom sockets, limbs, and both left and right mechanical hands in a variety of sizes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_0623-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"victoria-hand-project-ukraine-3d-printed-prosthetic\" class=\"wp-image-62169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_0623-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_0623-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_0623-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_0623-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_0623.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The development all happens very quickly. Up to three patients can come in during a single day for a 3D scan of their arms using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/recap\/overview?term=1-YEAR&amp;tab=subscription\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Autodesk Recap<\/a>. Clinicians input the dimensions and customizations into a software application with an easy user interface. The customized prosthetic then 3D prints right away or overnight. Patients can be fitted the very next day and walk out the door with an entirely new physical capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCollaboration with Fusion is so important with our work. We can easily open and edit files, and our partners can also simply share a file. We\u2019re not having to download from DropBox, Google Drive, or anything like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Michael Peirone, CEO, Victoria Hand Project<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"evolving-the-process-for-3d-printing-prostheticsnbsp\"><strong>Evolving the process for 3D printing prosthetics <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Victoria Hand Project is using a relatively new user interface and customization workflow in Ukraine. In the past year, they decided to take a different approach to how clinicians created custom prosthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, clinicians entered the anatomical dimensions into a Fusion parametric model and created a library of various sizes of limb sockets, with different lengths and circumferences. The clinician would select a socket closely matching the patient\u2019s limb size and use <a href=\"https:\/\/meshmixer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meshmixer<\/a> to customize the socket using a 3D scan. Over time, the Victoria Hand Project team discovered this hindered growth as most clinicians have limited CAD experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"524\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/VHP-TH-Limb-Scan-1024x524.jpg\" alt=\"victoria-hand-project-ukraine-3d-scan\" class=\"wp-image-62157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/VHP-TH-Limb-Scan-1024x524.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/VHP-TH-Limb-Scan-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/VHP-TH-Limb-Scan-768x393.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/VHP-TH-Limb-Scan-1536x786.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/VHP-TH-Limb-Scan.jpg 1918w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d been doing that process for many years, and it worked pretty well,\u201d Peirone says. \u201cBut as we learned more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.autodesk.com\/view\/fusion360\/ENU\/?guid=GUID-A92A4B10-3781-4925-94C6-47DA85A4F65A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">API tools for Fusion<\/a> we thought, \u2018Hey, we can automate some of this and do everything entirely in Fusion.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWith our previous process, it would take us 20 minutes or even longer to design a custom socket. Now, we can create one in less than 10\u202fminutes and it\u2019s ready for 3D printing. Now, it\u2019s incredibly intuitive for clinicians. All they need to do is simply click the type of hand, model, features, and sizes. Short videos alongside the information fields deliver clear instructions on what to input and where.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a really easy tool for clinicians to use, and Fusion is powering it all,\u201d Peirone says. \u201cThey don\u2019t need to navigate through the CAD features because everything is automated.
