I know I have. In our previous post series, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/get-smart-with-fusion-360-3d-modeling-terminology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Get Smart with Fusion 360\u2019<\/a> we learned how Fusion 360\u2019s modeling kernel\u2014Autodesk Shape Manager (ASM)\u2014creates the 3D shapes we want to see on screen. In this series, we\u2019ll discover the seven most common causes of modeling failures in Fusion 360 and learn techniques for avoiding (or fixing!) the problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with the sins of high curvature and near tangency.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"high-curvaturenbsp\">High curvature <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>\u2018Curvature\u2019 is a measure of how much geometry bends. A straight line has zero curvature. A tight radius has high curvature. Geometry with high curvature isn\u2019t a problem, but it can cause problems downstream. For example, if we offset from a surface that has high curvature, our new surface may include self-intersections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image001-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"high-curvature-fusion-360\" class=\"wp-image-60502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image001-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image001-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image001-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image001.jpg 1432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some modeling operations cope well with self-intersections (e.g. Offset &amp; Fillet), and some not so well (e.g. Sweep). High curvature areas of a surface can be found with the curvature analysis or Isocurve\/Curvature comb analysis tools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image002-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"high-curvature-detail-fusion-360\" class=\"wp-image-60507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image002-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image002-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image002-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image002.jpg 1432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t edit the existing geometry to remove high curvature from the surface you are working with, you may need to work around the problem and approximate the self-intersecting area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Tip<\/em><\/strong><em>: Temporarily cut away areas of high curvature, and test if the surface will thicken without them. This can help you prove that the high curvature area is the problem before you start unpicking your model.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"near-tangencynbsp\">Near Tangency <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Two adjacent faces are tangent continuous when they meet and follow the same curvature. Mathematically, the normal directions at both edges match. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/get-smart-with-fusion-360-3d-modeling-terminology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here for a more detailed description of curvature continuity)<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the normal directions don\u2019t match, and the discrepancy is small, the relationship is \u2018Near Tangent\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image003-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"near-tangency-fusion-360\" class=\"wp-image-60512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image003-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image003-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image003-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image003.jpg 1432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This can cause a problem because Fusion 360 uses different algorithms for tangent and non-tangent surfaces. Near tangency can cause Fusion 360 to choose the wrong algorithm \u2013 or at least, not the one you expected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Near Tangent problems are often built into the design at the sketch level. If you are suffering from near tangency, check that your sketch constraints are \u2018Tangent\u2019 or \u2018Curvature. If you\u2019ve been using Lofts or Patches, check that the edge conditions are set to \u2018Tangent (G1)\u2019 or \u2018Curvature (G2)\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Tip<\/em><\/strong><em>: Use Curvature Comb Analysis on edges, or Isocurve analysis on faces (with the Curvature comb option), to make tangency easier to visualize.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image004-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"near-tangency-fusion-360-detail\" class=\"wp-image-60517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image004-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image004-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image004-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image004.jpg 1432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To fix a near tangency problem, correct the underlying geometry of you can.
