Dr. Hannes Schwenke of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uksh.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in L\u00fcbeckcon<\/a>, Germany is pioneering an entirely new way to understand brain aneurysms, train doctors, and provide better treatment by 3D printing artery models and a replica of the vascular system.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/fusion-360-additive-manufacturing-3d-printing-capabilities\/\">3D printing<\/a> enables Dr. Schwenke to reproduce the individual anatomy of an aneurysm with high precision, enabling a deep understanding of the diseased vessel. It helps surgeons, including himself, visualize and learn more about the intricacies of brain aneurysms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe aneurysm surgeries that we do are minimally invasive endovascular procedures through the inguinal arteries or the wrist arteries, all under fluoroscopy,\u201d he explains. \u201cWe then access the brain through these approaches with catheters. With the 3D printed models, Dr. Schwenke and his team have been able to improve training, operations, and procedure outcomes dramatically.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"recreating-the-vascular-system-with-3d-modeling-and-3d-printingnbsp\">Recreating the vascular system with 3D modeling and 3D printing <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>3D printing is gaining popularity and adoption in the medical industry. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/limbitless-solutions\/\">3D-printed prosthetics<\/a> and orthopedic replacements are now commonplace. The medical research community is also quickly getting on board. Typically, they isolate a relevant artery through a combination of CT scans and 3D rotational angiography (or 3DRA). After processing and prepping the data in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/netfabb\/overview?term=1-YEAR&amp;tab=subscription\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Netfabb<\/a>, the team can transfer the data over to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/free-trial?mktvar002=4333583001|ORG|&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=other&amp;utm_campaign=4333583dmblogf360&amp;utm_id=4333583001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fusion 360<\/a>. Once in Fusion 360, they can transfer the data to 3D print a physical, scale model of the artery.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Schwenke can easily print the models with a seamless workflow from Fusion 360 to&nbsp;his <a href=\"https:\/\/formlabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Formlabs 3D printers<\/a>.&nbsp;He even&nbsp;gets notifications sent to his&nbsp;smartwatch&nbsp;to check on remaining print times. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every new model becomes an opportunity for Dr. Schwenke to learn, run simulations, and visualize what&#8217;s usually hidden within our bodies. He\u2019s excited about what\u2019s on the horizon with 3D printing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have new 3D printing materials and new resin grades,\u201d he says. \u201cThe process is always evolving. We\u2019re talking about manufacturing implants [next].
