In the United States, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/NAGPRA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Native American Protection and Repatriation A<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/NAGPRA\">ct<\/a> became law in 1990 with the mandate to return artifacts to tribes. But, three decades later, progress is still slow. And when Native American artifacts are returned, they&#8217;re often in poor condition or even poisonous to the touch, as museum curators used arsenic as a preservative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology is becoming an important part of restoring artifacts to a usable state. It\u2019s dated to approximately 1875-1910. After experimenting on his own and finishing a pilot project using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/free-trial?mktvar002=4333583001|ORG|&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=other&amp;utm_campaign=4333583dmblogf360&amp;utm_id=4333583001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Autodesk Fusion 360<\/a> for another instrument, Loomis discovered he could create fully functional, printable replica instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce I figured out some basic drawing and modeling functions, it was really easy to build on the knowledge,\u201d Loomis says in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/learn-lab\/2023\/01\/18\/scholars-replicate-indigenous-flutes-with-3d-printing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn Lab article<\/a>. \u201cThe software makes it easy to create bulges, dips, creases, and contours that would be impossible for me to do by hand. I like how easy it is with Fusion 360 to translate an idea in my head into a 3D digital image that I can examine from any angle.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His process for the block flute included carefully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/scan-to-cad-workflow\/\">3D scanning<\/a> the artifact to create the model in Fusion 360 and using <a href=\"https:\/\/formlabs.com\/3d-printers\/form-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Formlabs Form 3<\/a>, a stereolithography apparatus (SLA) 3D printer, for the physical replica. Fusion 360 also made it possible to repair the original split wood in the digital model and restore playability to the replica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more about the project\u2019s journey <a
