We hope you all had a terrific holiday break.\u00a0A\u00a0few\u00a0of\u00a0us here in Portland, Oregon had a pretty exciting December.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: FrutigerNextPro, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">We finished up our<\/span>\u00a0UAV\u00a0crowd\u00a0source\u00a0challenge with\u00a0ADX Portland and Fusion\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: FrutigerNextPro, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">360\u00a0community member Stan Hisel<\/span>. We&#8217;re really\u00a0excited\u00a0to\u00a0share\u00a0with\u00a0you\u00a0how\u00a0it\u00a0went!<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLmA_xUT-8UlJV7v2E4UQKEZZYNajB77iD\" width=\"853\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Last December, two teams in Portland, Oregon participated in\u00a0a\u00a0one-week challenge to design small, inexpensive, fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicles with the purpose of surveying wildlife preserves to help prevent poaching. Fusion 360 Community member Stan Hisel provided initial guidance, onsite mentoring over the first weekend, a starter foam material kit, and a Fusion 360 model.\u00a0Then he set the teams loose to see what they could design and figure out.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: FrutigerNextPro, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">When he returned the following week, he was greeted on fly day with two\u00a0assembled, cost-effective, and flyable UAVs. We took a bunch of <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/photos\/112253076675822808485\/albums\/5958072380922663985?authkey=CNfQ3_nEjdqpSQ\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\">pictures<\/a> too. Great job guys!<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: FrutigerNextPro, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: FrutigerNextPro, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>Why Stan?<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Stan Hisel is a professional unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designer.\u00a0Stan believes, as do many others in the drone community, that open source UAV technology available today and can efficiently and cheaply survey wildlife preserves better than conventional human\u00a0aerial surveillance teams can. He&#8217;s already deeply involved in projects that use civilian UAV technology for agricultural crop dusting and bird migration research monitoring. \u00a0For him this is yet another great application of emerging technology that can be used to solve a real and urgently pressing issues.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: FrutigerNextPro, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>Why Rhinos?<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.environment.gov.za\/mediarelease\/update_on_rhino_poaching\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\">946\u00a0rhinos <\/a>were poached last year\u00a0in South Africa.\u00a0Morbidly, this was actually\u00a0an achievement to keep the number under 1k. Early projections had the milestone as being inevitable.\u00a0For context, there are just over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/details\/6557\/0\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\">5,000 black rhinos left<\/a> (at all) on the planet.\u00a0Moral victory aside, the 946 statistic contains a mix of black and gray rhinos who were removed from a region of the world that contains over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-25492794\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\">80%<\/a> of the world&#8217;s remaining rhino population.\u00a0This year was a profound loss. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/23\/science\/experts-say-poaching-could-soon-lead-to-a-decline-in-the-rhino-population.html?_r=0\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\">The numbers will get worse <\/a>too unless corrective action is taken.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Onward to the global &#8220;Wildlife UAV Conservation Challenge!&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So why did we\u00a0do such a short challenge in December? Well, because this\u00a0February kicks off a much bigger global competition to go after tackling this problem. It&#8217;s called the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcuavc.com\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wildlife UAV Conservation Challenge\u00a0<\/a>and our teams are going to participate in it. This is a worldwide competition\u00a0with prize money and a trip to South Africa at stake.\u00a0Both teams met\u00a0last Sunday\u00a0at\u00a0ADX\u00a0and\u00a0assembled\u00a0an\u00a0exciting\u00a0new\u00a0blend\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0old\u00a0team\u00a0members\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0few\u00a0new\u00a0injections\u00a0of\u00a0needed\u00a0talent\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0areas\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0wcuavc\u00a0challenge\u00a0that\u00a0delve\u00a0into\u00a0surveillance\u00a0systems. There are over 100 teams already entered in this challenge and it is anticipated to be highly competitive.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Team entries will be submitted by the end of February. We&#8217;ll be following their progress! Everything they are doing is open source. When Fusion 360 goes live with public groups we&#8217;ll have that made available as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Again,\u00a0congrats\u00a0to both &#8220;Team Oxpecker&#8221; and &#8220;Team Drone Thugz and Harmony&#8221; on your initial successes and good\u00a0luck\u00a0in\u00a0your\u00a0next\u00a0phase!<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>How&#8217;d Fusion 360 do in all of this? \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">How&#8217;d our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/solutions\/3d-cad-software\">CAD<\/a> friend do you ask? Pretty well actually! Going into this event we had no idea how much of a role Fusion was going to play.\u00a0Very few of the 20+ people involved had ever used it, and\u00a0using Fusion wasn&#8217;t a requirement at all to participate. We didn&#8217;t offer any prize or added incentive to model in it aside from giving them access to the initial cad model and a few workflow video ideas we had of how Fusion might help them. If it helped, cool. If not, no big deal. So, basically we\u00a0asked 20+ people to build an airplane\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0learn a new cad\/collaboration tool in a week. \u00a0Was this crazy?<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Actually, no!\u00a0Fusion got used. We saw real and substantial use cases developed organically. The teams used Fusion 360 to:<\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Create their hot wire cutter profiles to remove sections from their fuselages by exporting dxf files for laser cutting.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Add stiffening ribs to the control surfaces (wings, rudders, etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Create different wing profiles via SVG file imports from open source airfoil profile websites<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Model their motor mounts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Take model measurements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Access a common events calendar.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: FrutigerNextPro, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">It was exciting to see\u00a0in this real design challenge as it went down\u00a0what really worked (and didn&#8217;t work). Our development team was there watching and taking notes. Over the week we had support from various people on our user experience, quality assurance and product management teams.\u00a0It&#8217;s all part of our\u00a0ongoing\u00a0effort to make sure we really understand what&#8217;s important as we continue developing.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: FrutigerNextPro, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But enough Fusion.
