Click on the <em>Model&nbsp;<\/em>icon at the far left of the toolbar to switch to the <em>Render <\/em>workspace.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5aef4abcae.png\" alt=\"Render workspace.png\" title=\"Render workspace.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When you do this, you may notice that the environment changes slightly. This happens because the environments you use for modeling are different than the environments that have been created specifically for rendering.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5aef6ca85b.png\" alt=\"workspaces.png\" title=\"workspaces.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Once you are in the rendering workspace, you will see new tools in the toolbar.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">One set of tools for setting up the appearance of your model \u2013 called SETUP. And another set of tools for rendering and creating an image \u2013 called RENDER.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5aefa19120.png\" alt=\"Render toolbar.png\" title=\"Render toolbar.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In this post, we will concentrate on the Appearance tool under SETUP.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"side-note-about-materials-in-fusion-360\">Side Note About Materials in Fusion 360<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Did you know that there are two types of materials in Fusion360? There are <em>physical materials<\/em> and <em>appearance materials<\/em>. Physical materials dictate what the object is made of and is used in mass calculations. Appearance materials dictate how the object will look when rendered.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-appearance-dialog-box\">The Appearance Dialog Box<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Double click on the Appearance icon in the toolbar to open the appearance dialog box. The Appearance dialog box has several sections to it:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Apply To<\/strong> \u2013 This allows you to switch between applying materials to bodies\/components or individual faces.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>In This Design<\/strong> \u2013 This shows which materials have been assigned to parts of your design. Note: If you have the same material assigned to several parts on your model, it will only show up as one material in the <em>In This Design<\/em> section.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Library <\/strong>\u2013 In this section, you can switch between the new Fusion 360 Appearance Library of materials and the Legacy Appearance Library. It also contains the folders and sub-folders of materials broken down by common categories and example swatches of the materials themselves.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"assigning-materials\">Assigning Materials<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Materials can be assigned to a component, an individual body, or a group of bodies or faces on a body.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"assigning-materials-to-bodies\">Assigning Materials to Bodies<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"single-body\">Single Body<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Click and hold on the desired material and drop it on the body \u2013 the body will have the material applied.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5aefb67bd4.png\" alt=\"Assign material.png\" title=\"Assign material.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"multiple-bodies\">Multiple Bodies<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Pre-select bodies in the browser and drag a material on one of the selected bodies \u2013 the selected bodies will have the material applied.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5aeff97781.png\" alt=\"Assign material 2.png\" title=\"Assign material 2.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"replace-applied-material\">Replace Applied Material<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Drag a material from the materials library and drop it on an existing material in the <em>In This Design<\/em> section of the Appearance dialog box \u2014 all of the objects that the old material applied will now have the new material.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af03a7ab8.png\" alt=\"Assign material 3.png\" title=\"Assign material 3.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af05b8466.png\" alt=\"Assign material 4.png\" title=\"Assign material 4.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bodies-in-a-group-folder\">Bodies In a Group Folder<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Drag a material to the browser&#8217;s top Bodies folder \u2013 the material will be applied to all of the bodies in the folder.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af0976059.png\" alt=\"2014-06-12 04.34.06 pm.png\" title=\"2014-06-12 04.34.06 pm.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Note: If you apply a material to a group of bodies and one or more of those bodies already have a material applied you will be presented with the following question:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af0deaf90.png\" alt=\"replace bodies.png\" title=\"replace bodies.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Remove<\/strong> \u2013 all of the existing applied materials will be replaced with the new material you applied.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Keep<\/strong> \u2013 only the bodies you selected that didn\u2019t already have a material applied will have the new material applied.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"assigning-materials-to-faces\">Assigning Materials to Faces<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">You can also assign materials to individual faces on a model.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In the <em>Apply To<\/em> section at the top of the Appearance dialog box, select <em>Faces<\/em><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When you drag a material from the material library onto a body, you will notice that individual faces on the body will highlight as you hover over the top of them.&nbsp; Release the mouse button, and the highlighted face will receive the new material.<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af0f1c8bd.png\" alt=\"material on face.png\" title=\"material on face.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Note: If you apply a material to a body or a group of bodies and one or more of those bodies already have a material applied to a face, you will be presented with the following question:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af11711d9.png\" alt=\"replace faces.png\" title=\"replace faces.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Remove<\/strong> \u2013 all of the existing materials on the faces will be replaced with the new material you applied to the body.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Keep<\/strong> \u2013 all of the existing materials on the face will not be replaced with the new material you applied to the body.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"editing-materials\">Editing Materials<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Once a material has been applied to a body or face in your design, you can change the material&#8217;s look by editing it.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">To edit a material, double click on the material swatch in the <em>In This Design<\/em> section of the Appearance dialog box.&nbsp; A small editor window will appear next to the Appearance dialog box.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af12a8d08.png\" alt=\"edit materials 1.png\" title=\"edit materials 1.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">n this editor window, you can:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Change the name of the material.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Edit the color \u2013 either by dragging the color sliders or by entering an RGB value.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Change the scale of the texture map that is part of the material (if appropriate)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Rotate the texture map that part of the material (if appropriate)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Go to Advanced options<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"advanced-option\">Advanced Option.<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Clicking on the advanced options button will open up another dialog box with more parameters that will change the look of the material.&nbsp; The options in the advanced editor will differ depending on the material you are editing.&nbsp; The options in the example below are for textured plastic.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af14449a6.png\" alt=\"edit materials 2.png\" title=\"edit materials 2.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Reflectance<\/strong>: How much light is reflected from the surface.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Roughness<\/strong>: Controls how rough the surface is, which affects how shiny the surface appears.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Relief Pattern (Bump<\/strong>): This shows the bump map that has been applied.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Advanced Highlight Controls<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Color<\/strong>: changes the color of the highlight. Most of the time, you will leave this white for a realistic look.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shape<\/strong>: Change between smooth highlights (Long Falloff) and sharper highlights (Short Falloff)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Once you have finished editing, click the OK button or hit Cancel to go back to the original settings.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"duplicate-a-material\">Duplicate a Material<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sometimes it is quicker to copy an existing material and change one parameter than creating new materials from scratch all the time.&nbsp; To duplicate a material, right-click on the swatch in the <em>In This Design<\/em> section of the Application dialog box and select <em>Duplicate<\/em>.&nbsp; A copy of the material appears and can be edited and assigned.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"deleting-materials\">Deleting Materials<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There will be times when you have been assigning\/testing multiple materials, and you can end up with several swatches in the <em>In This Design<\/em> section that is not applied to any faces or bodies.&nbsp; To clean this up, right-click on any swatch and select <em>Delete All Unused<\/em>.&nbsp; Any unapplied material swatches will be deleted.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"check-your-work-quick-render-mode\">Check Your Work: Quick Render Mode<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When you have finished applying and editing up your materials, you should start up the render in Quick mode to see how the materials will look when the Rapid Ray Tracer (RRT) is creating the image. From the toolbar, select <em>Enable Ray Tracing<\/em> under RENDER.&nbsp; The RAY TRACING dialog box will appear. Change the Quality setting to <em>Quick<\/em><strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af15d4e94.png\" alt=\"2014-06-12 12.42.25 pm.png\" title=\"2014-06-12 12.42.25 pm.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img_62c5af16e46ce.png\" alt=\"Render modes.png\" title=\"Render modes.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Now you can assign and edit materials in the Fusion 360 materials library.
