But the images you&#8217;ll find are not the DIY planters you&#8217;d expect \u2014 they&#8217;re sleek, minimalist interiors and exteriors. Concrete is now seen as a material that conveys luxury. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In part, this shift is thanks to glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC), a material that makes futuristic concrete designs possible. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/concretecountertopinstitute.com\/free-training\/introduction-to-gfrc-glass-fiber-reinforced-concrete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">invented in the 1940s<\/a>, but it wasn&#8217;t frequently used in buildings until the 1970s. Michael Mitris and Scott Henderson, for example, took notice of GFRC\u2019s growth in the United States. As a result, they merged Henderson\u2019s background in carpentry and Mitris\u2019 experience in construction management to found <a href=\"https:\/\/concretecollective.com.au\/\">Concrete Collective<\/a>. They also recently started a new standard collection, which will soon be available to order via their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.concretecollective.com.au\/shift\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online store<\/a>. \u201cWe try to push boundaries and do things that other people haven\u2019t done before,\u201d says Michael Mitris, co-founder and director, Concrete Collective.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"designing-with-autodesk-fusion\">Designing with Autodesk Fusion<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/free-trial?mktvar002=4333583008&amp;utm_medium=mngd-referral&amp;utm_source=industry-partner&amp;utm_campaign=4333583dmblogf360&amp;utm_id=4333583008\">Autodesk Fusion<\/a> plays a critical role in Concrete Collective&#8217;s design process. Once the team has an idea or receives a request from a client, they open up Fusion and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/3-reasons-to-use-the-fusion-360-nesting-and-fabrication-extension\/\">get to work<\/a>. They start by 3D modeling the concrete shape. Then, they add a steel subframe beneath those surfaces. It\u2019s all going to work because it\u2019s all in one place. That&#8217;s where we struggled previously. Moving over to Fusion helped us a lot.\u201d<\/p><cite>Michael Mitris, co-founder and director, Concrete Collective<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"taking-a-digital-approach-to-molds-and-nesting\"><strong>Taking a Digital Approach to Molds and Nesting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Concrete Collective makes its bespoke molds from melamine because it\u2019s more affordable, and it&#8217;s disposable. Mitris notes that using plywood can double or triple the price, and it leads to a considerable amount of waste since it can&#8217;t be reused. We have greater visibility into our project and how it all comes together. Whatever we have drawn in the actual model itself is what&#8217;s going to end up on the CNC\u2014even if you change your live model\u2014and that gives us great piece of mind when going through each stage of the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we gave the Manufacturing Extension a go, we found that it was far more efficient at nesting than the other products we were using,\u201d Mitris continues. \u201cWe used one or two fewer melamine sheets when cutting multiple items and have saved even more for larger projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"switching-to-autodesk-fusion\"><strong>Switching to Autodesk Fusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Concrete Collective switched to Fusion around a year and a half ago, and they haven\u2019t looked back since. Fusion enables the team to iterate easily and send their projects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/fusion-360-nesting-fabrication-extension\/\">straight to the CNC<\/a>. \u201cFusion really looks after everything from start to finish in the design process,\u201d Mitris says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just believe Fusion is a great tool to be able to build something in 3D and see what the product is going to look like as you&#8217;re designing it,\u201d he continues. \u201cYou\u2019re actually creating the product rather than having 2D models and everything coming together later.
