Please let us know if you find the video helpful by leaving feedback on our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/help.autodesk.com\/view\/fusion360\/ENU\/courses\/AP-COLLAB-DESIGN-RESERVATION\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self-Paced Learning site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"creating-a-sketch\">Creating a Sketch <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at how to create a <strong>Sketch <\/strong>in the<strong> Sketch<\/strong> environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, if you\u2019re creating a design that will contain multiple components, make sure you create and activate the component you want the sketch to appear within.&nbsp;This will ensure that any sketches you create will be contained within that active component, helping you keep your geometry organized.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, on the <strong>Solid<\/strong> tab in the <strong>Design <\/strong>workspace, select <strong>Create Sketch<\/strong> from the toolbar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fusion 360 asks you to define the sketch plane by selecting either a plane or planar face, based on the way you want to orient the object you\u2019re designing in 3D space. You can select an origin plane, an existing construction plane, or a planar face on an existing body. For the first sketch in a new design, hover over one of the origin planes, like the <strong>XY<\/strong> plane, and click to select it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-select-sketch-plane.jpg\" alt=\"select-plane-fusion-360-sketch-environment\" class=\"wp-image-30011\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-select-sketch-plane.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-select-sketch-plane-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fusion 360 automatically rotates the view to look directly at the sketch plane, to make it easier for you to create orthogonal geometry.&nbsp;The <strong>Sketch Grid<\/strong>, <strong>Origin<\/strong>, and planar <strong>Axes <\/strong>appear on the sketch plane to make it easier to create accurate geometry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t want the view to rotate automatically when you create or edit sketches, navigate to <strong>Preferences<\/strong>, then in the <strong>Design <\/strong>section, uncheck <strong>Auto Look At Sketch<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"614\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-pref-auto-look-at-sketch-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"auto-look-at-sketch-sketch-environment\" class=\"wp-image-30016\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-pref-auto-look-at-sketch-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-pref-auto-look-at-sketch-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-pref-auto-look-at-sketch-768x460.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-pref-auto-look-at-sketch.jpg 1480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"timeline-and-browser-features\">Timeline and Browser Features <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>After you create your <strong>Sketch<\/strong>, the new <strong>Sketch <\/strong>feature displays in the <strong>Timeline <\/strong>and in the <strong>Browser<\/strong>, nested within the active component.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-browser-timeline.jpg\" alt=\"sketch-browser-timeline\" class=\"wp-image-30006\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-browser-timeline.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-browser-timeline-253x300.jpg 253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Select the <strong>Sketch <\/strong>in the <strong>Browser<\/strong>, click again to rename, and enter a clear and meaningful name for the sketch to make sure you and your project members can navigate the design easily as the assembly becomes more complex.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sketch-contextual-tab\">Sketch Contextual Tab <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Sketch <\/strong>contextual tab displays on the toolbar and remains there while you edit the sketch. It contains all the tools you need to create, modify, and constrain sketch geometry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"58\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-sketch-contextual-tab-1024x58.jpg\" alt=\"sketch-contextual-tab-fusion-360\" class=\"wp-image-30026\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-sketch-contextual-tab-1024x58.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-sketch-contextual-tab-300x17.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-sketch-contextual-tab-768x43.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-sketch-contextual-tab-1536x86.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-sketch-contextual-tab.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tools in the <strong>Create <\/strong>menu let you:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Add basic geometry like lines, rectangles, and text;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Mirror or pattern basic geometry;&nbsp;<\/li><li>And project reference geometry from outside the sketch onto the sketch plane.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The tools in the <strong>Modify <\/strong>menu let you:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Offset geometry;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Add details like fillets and chamfers;&nbsp;<\/li><li>And adjust existing geometry as you build your sketch profile.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The tools in the <strong>Constraints <\/strong>menu let you:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Control the relative positions of geometry to help you fully define the size and shape of the sketch profile.&nbsp;<\/li><li>For example, you can constrain geometry to be coincident, equal, parallel, or tangent to other geometry in the sketch.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sketch-palette\">Sketch Palette <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Sketch Palette<\/strong> also displays while you edit the sketch. It contains options to control linetypes and visibility of objects like the <strong>Sketch Grid<\/strong>, <strong>Points<\/strong>, <strong>Dimensions<\/strong>, <strong>Constraints<\/strong>, and <strong>Projected Geometry<\/strong> on the fly while you sketch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-sketch-palette.jpg\" alt=\"sketch-palette-fusion-360\" class=\"wp-image-30021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-sketch-palette.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/skt-sketch-palette-146x300.jpg 146w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For more complex sketches, you may want to enable <strong>3D Sketch<\/strong>, which lets you define sketch geometry that isn\u2019t confined to the 2D sketch plane.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"finish-sketch\">Finish Sketch <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Once you finish defining a sketch, on the toolbar or in the <strong>Sketch Palette<\/strong>, click <strong>Finish Sketch<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Sketch <\/strong>contextual tab disappears from the toolbar and you return to the 3D design environment. Now you can use the sketch profile to create 3D solid, surface, or T-Spline geometry in your design.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you continue working, use the visibility icon in the <strong>Browser <\/strong>to show or hide the sketch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also right-click the sketch to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Show or hide its <strong>Profile<\/strong>, <strong>Dimensions<\/strong>, or <strong>Projected Geometry<\/strong>;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Find it in the canvas or the <strong>Timeline<\/strong>;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Or <strong>Redefine the Sketch Plane<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"edit-sketch\">Edit Sketch <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>There will be times when you need to come back and edit a sketch at a later date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you need to modify the sketch profile or its constraints, locate the <strong>Sketch <\/strong>feature in the <strong>Browser <\/strong>or the <strong>Timeline<\/strong>, right-click, then select <strong>Edit Sketch<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Sketch <\/strong>contextual tab reappears, and you can make any changes you need to the sketch profile.
