Electric violins can also be hand-built, but machines often mass-produce them in factories. Gifted luthier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksblutherie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kevin Basl<meta charset=\"utf-8\">\u00e9<\/a> teamed up with Autodesk to create a new manufacturing process for electric violins. The resulting method uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/generative-design-extension#trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generative design<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/free-trial?mktvar002=4333583001|ORG|&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=other&amp;utm_campaign=4333583dmblogf360&amp;utm_id=4333583001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Autodesk Fusion 360<\/a> and combines the best parts of human craftsmanship and digital manufacturing technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basl\u00e9 designed and made the GD Violin with the help of engineers at the Autodesk Technology Center in Birmingham, UK. <meta charset=\"utf-8\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Basl<meta charset=\"utf-8\">\u00e9 is a true artisan who has hand-made many acoustic and electric violins, each custom-built and unique. He began as a professional carpenter and joiner, but his interest in music ultimately led to a career in violin-making. This enables violinists to express their own unique personalities through instrument design. The most common materials for electric violins today are plastics, acrylic, and carbon fiber. Basl\u00e9 wanted to return to using the material he knew best, wood, because <meta charset=\"utf-8\">of its warmth and character. But how could he balance cost and playability while creating something truly unique for his customers?<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"developing-a-new-violin-design-process\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Developing a new violin design process<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>A new approach was needed. \u201cWe began to think about modeling an electric violin using AI, which was unproven in the violin industry,\u201d says <meta charset=\"utf-8\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Basl<meta charset=\"utf-8\">\u00e9. \u201cIt had to function as a musical instrument, of course, but the design could be completely different. He also wanted the player to be able to source standard fittings <meta charset=\"utf-8\">from local violin shops, such as the tailpiece, tuning pegs, the chin rest, and shoulder rest. \u201cI wanted the player to change fittings according to what they prefer, without needing to adapt their playing style,\u201d says <meta charset=\"utf-8\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Basl<meta charset=\"utf-8\">\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"exploring-generative-design-in-autodesk-fusion-360\">Exploring generative design in Autodesk Fusion 360<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Peter Storey, a research engineer at Autodesk, introduced Basl\u00e9 to Fusion 360 and showed him how generative design can be used for a completely new way to design electric violins. The first step was giving the generative design algorithms some constraints to work with. \u201cWe explored what the bare minimum needed for a violin to function is: the places where the strings and standard fittings attach and the places the violinist would normally hold while playing. We started modeling only these parts in Fusion 360,&#8221; <meta charset=\"utf-8\">says Storey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/02-ReadyforGD-1024x554.jpg\" alt=\"creating-constraints-generative-design-in-fusion-360\" class=\"wp-image-28075\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/02-ReadyforGD-1024x554.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/02-ReadyforGD-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/02-ReadyforGD-768x416.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/02-ReadyforGD-1536x832.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/02-ReadyforGD.jpg 1677w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By keeping only essential parts, the generative design algorithm had maximum freedom to create a unique design that was as lightweight as possible. This method is scalable too\u2014each dimension can be changed, yielding a set of bespoke design constraints based on the intended player\u2019s preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After setting the constraints, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/generative-design-extension#trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generative design engine<\/a> in Fusion 360 proposed a range of solutions that mimic the organic shapes and lines in nature. Storey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/fusion-360-additive-manufacturing-3d-printing-capabilities\/\">3D printed<\/a> an initial prototype at the Autodesk Technology Center in Birmingham to ensure the selected design functioned perfectly before moving forward. Storey then showed Basl\u00e9 how the body could be milled from a single block of wood using a CNC Mill. This quality makes electric violins\u2014and other electric instruments\u2014ideal for generative design software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GD Violin is a perfect combination of human craftsmanship and advanced technology. Generative design created the design from parameters set by Storey and <meta charset=\"utf-8\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Basl<meta charset=\"utf-8\">\u00e9, but it still demands the artisan\u2019s touch. \u201cAlthough the shape of the body has little effect on the acoustics, without <meta charset=\"utf-8\">Basl\u00e9\u2019s expert craft, it would not sound the way it does,\u201d says Storey. Combining a powerful generative design tool, a desktop router, and an expert luthier is a completely novel way to manufacture an electric violin. This workflow bridges the gap between the lengthy handmade acoustic violin process and mass production that offers little customization for the individual player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fusion 360 allowed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kevin.s.basle\/\">Basl\u00e9<\/a> to design without constraint, and it keeps the cost of manufacture as low as possible. Basl<meta charset=\"utf-8\">\u00e9 affirms \u201cFusion 360 is an important professional tool to have for making this violin as it is an affordable software which allows me to make a high-quality finished product, and to keep the price low.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"digital-transformation-at-its-finest\">Digital transformation at its finest<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Generative design in Fusion 360 has transformed a decades-old method of making a popular musical instrument.
