The championship-winning NASCAR organization constantly explores new design and manufacturing innovations to keep their teams in the lead \u2014 always focusing on safety, performance, and weight reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In partnership with Autodesk, <a href=\"https:\/\/fom.autodesk.com\/stewart-haas-racing\/p\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stewart-Haas Racing<\/a> decided to try and lightweight the brake pedal, as this is one of the most critical parts of top driver <a href=\"https:\/\/colecuster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cole Custer<\/a>\u2019s No. 41 Ford Mustang.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"optimizing-with-generative-design\">Optimizing with generative design<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The team used <meta charset=\"utf-8\">traditional manufacturing methods to design the existing brake pedal. Eventually, they had exhausted the options for any additional weight savings. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/generative-design-extension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Autodesk Fusion 360<\/a>, the team used generative design to discover multiple new designs with weight and safety in mind. They decided on their top choice for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/machine-simulation-features-autodesk-fusion-360\/\">simulation<\/a> testing and manufactured it with Renishaw\u2019s Ren 500Q quad-laser powder bed metal printing 3D system.<\/p>\n\n\n<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stewart-Haas wins the race with generative design technology\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gL_gVu4_Xyo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen style=\"aspect-ratio:500 \/ 281;width:100%;height:auto;\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The team tested the pedal in-house to simulate normal braking events over multiple race distances, representing 3000 laps of braking. \u201cThe pedal withstood all of those loads and cycles flawlessly,\u201d says Walter Mitchell, Engineering Integration Manager, Stewart-Haas Racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stewart-Haas Racing realized a 32% reduction in weight and a 50% increase in stiffness for the new brake pedal.
