For the past three years, I have been lucky\u00a0enough\u00a0to attend the Develop3D Live Event put on by the\u00a0publishers\u00a0at\u00a0Develop 3D<\/a>. It is held at the\u00a0Warwick\u00a0University\u00a0Arts center<\/a>\u00a0in the midlands of the UK.\u00a0Develop3D covers\u00a0CAD\/CAM\/PLM<\/a> in web, mobile and a gorgeous print magazine. \u00a0Al, Martyn, Steven, and the whole D3D team is a great bunch, working hard to provide good coverage of our industry. There\u00a0usually\u00a0is a beer or two in it too.<\/p>\n

Here are a few thoughts and pictures from the day:<\/p>\n

After Martyn, the keynote speaker was\u00a0Daniel Simon<\/a>. Daniel is an\u00a0accomplished designer.\u00a0 He has worked on films like\u00a0Tron,\u00a0Legacy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Oblivion<\/a>\u00a0as well as publishing several books of his transportation racing creations. \u00a0We are lucky\u00a0enough\u00a0to have a big poster of one of Daniel’s creations hanging on the wall in one of our Lake Oswego\u00a0office\u00a0conference\u00a0rooms. \u00a0It was obvious that Daniel’s talk was\u00a0a\u00a0big draw to many of\u00a0the\u00a0students. \u00a0He signed books for hours after his talk. \u00a0I know because the line blocked the path to the\u00a0bathroom for most of the day.<\/p>\n

After Daniel, there were a few more presentations and then\u00a0Buzz Kross<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0gave a talk about\u00a0Autodesk Fusion 360<\/a>\u00a0showing exactly what it is. \u00a0Buzz covered why Fusion 360 is different and how customers are using it. \u00a0He demoed the capabilities for design, cam as well as team\u00a0collaboration. \u00a0It\u00a0was impressive seeing the\u00a0audience\u00a0react to what was shown. Some of Buzz’s demos covered future capabilities\u00a0coming\u00a0this summer. \u00a0This\u00a0included\u00a0progress on our\u00a0animations\u00a0and\u00a0drawings.<\/p>\n

I think D3D is unique because in one day, you have every major CAD vendor present. \u00a0It is a\u00a0singular chance to see and hear from leaders across our industry.<\/p>\n

What I value most about getting to go to this event is the number of customers I get to meet.\u00a0I\u00a0enjoyed\u00a0it\u00a0immensely\u00a0and find the chance to learn and connect with so many customers in one place the best part of my trip to the UK. \u00a0\u00a0Gus Petrikas<\/a>, covered recently as part of our\u00a0Behind the Design interviews<\/a>, sat\u00a0down\u00a0with me and we spent some time at the event coffee shop. We talked about some of his more recent Fusion 360 designs and how he really needs to get a new computer. \u00a0I was able\u00a0to show\u00a0off some new\u00a0capabilities\u00a0coming in our\u00a0May update related to materials and materials assignment. \u00a0I learned a lot\u00a0listening\u00a0to his\u00a0challenges\u00a0and reactions to what we looked at. \u00a0The\u00a0ability\u00a0to manage\u00a0materials\u00a0and explore different appearances impressed him and It was obvious to me that it\u00a0will\u00a0make\u00a0life easier for Gus to\u00a0explore\u00a0his design ideas. \u00a0Gus is using\u00a0blender\u00a0and GPU rendering today and hopefully we can improve his workflow in the\u00a0coming months.<\/p>\n

I met so many nice customers while in the booth too. I can’t remember all the names but I left hearing that people were interested to try Fusion 360. \u00a0It was great to hear from those who had tried it and what their\u00a0wish-lists\u00a0were. \u00a0The work we are doing on rendering and drawings is going to pay off because it came up more than once as I talked with people about what\u00a0improvements\u00a0they were\u00a0looking\u00a0for.<\/p>\n
