But the days of traditional manufacturing are changing faster than you think, especially at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conturoprototyping.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Conturo Prototyping<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 2016 in the Point Breeze neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Conturo Prototyping began as a 1,000-square-foot shop. Image courtesy of&nbsp;Conturo&nbsp;Prototyping.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Conturo\u00a0Prototyping ended up programming the entire part in Fusion.\u00a0The\u00a0level of complex,\u00a0intricate geometry\u00a0meant it\u00a0would\u00a0have been almost impossible to\u00a0produce\u00a0using 3-axis machining. Instead, the\u00a0Conturo\u00a0engineering team decided to\u00a0purchase the Fusion Manufacturing Extension, which unlocked\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/fusion-360-5axis-machine-configuration\/\">5-axis<\/a>\u00a0functionality\u00a0inside their existing Fusion software,\u00a0meaning they could quickly\u00a0produce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/top-5-milling-code-references-that-every-machinist-should-know\/\">NC code<\/a> they needed to\u00a0run\u00a0their 5-axis mills.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&nbsp;were&nbsp;able to get&nbsp;the prototype back&nbsp;to our customer in a few weeks&nbsp;as opposed to&nbsp;six months or more&nbsp;from a&nbsp;casting vendor,\u201d he says. \u201cThis is how we end up solving so&nbsp;many client problems.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Conturo Prototyping in Pittsburgh with Fusion 360 Machining Extension\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iaNSTMLX_dE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen style=\"aspect-ratio:500 \/ 281;width:100%;height:auto;\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/machining-extension\">Fusion Manufacturing\u00a0Extension<\/a>\u00a0is a cost option that unlocks\u00a0a vast\u00a0array of advanced tools for CNC machining. In addition to\u00a05-axis\u00a0functions, including\u00a0automatic collision avoidance,\u00a0the extension unlocks access to\u00a0machining\u00a0strategies\u00a0like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/why-steep-and-shallow\/\">steep and shallow<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0simplify the machining of complex, feature-rich parts. The extension also\u00a0includes dedicated\u00a0toolpaths and workflows that can be used with\u00a0spindle-mounted probes\u00a0to measure components throughout the machining process\u00a0to help speed up set-up and improve\u00a0overall\u00a0part quality. The\u00a0extension is considered as being\u00a0extremely powerful, according to shop supervisor Patrick Fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Fusion Manufacturing Extension\u00a0can do some really advanced stuff on the CNCs,\u201d\u00a0Fee\u00a0says. \u201cFor example,\u00a0part alignment\u00a0typically\u00a0involves\u00a0a lot of shimming\u00a0to make the part\u00a0really flat. It can\u00a0take hours,\u00a0and it\u2019s\u00a0really stressful.
