Area selection happens when you do a \u201cdrag\u201d (LMB down, move the mouse, LMB up).&nbsp; It comes in 3 flavors: <STRONG>Window Selection, Freeform Selection, and Paint Selection<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/P><P><IMG border=\"0\" alt=\"area selection options.png\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/autodesk.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/90532iFECF14A1674F1257\/image-size\/original?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" title=\"area selection options.png\" \/><\/P><P>&nbsp;<\/P><P><STRONG><FONT size=\"3\">Window Selection<\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">The default is \u201cWindow Selection\u201d.&nbsp; You simply draw a rectangle by two points around things in your model to determine what is selected.<\/FONT><\/P><P>&nbsp;<\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">Window Select offers two different interactions:<\/FONT><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">Upper-left to lower-right.&nbsp; In this usage, only things that are completely inside the rectangle will be selected:<\/FONT><\/P><P>&nbsp;<\/P><P><IMG border=\"0\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.16.45 AM copy.png\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/autodesk.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/90536i980FD442140B1683\/image-size\/original?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" title=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.16.45 AM copy.png\" \/>&nbsp;<IMG border=\"0\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.16.06 AM copy.png\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/autodesk.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/90542i8340E27BC63C727C\/image-size\/original?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" title=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.16.06 AM copy.png\" \/><\/P><P>&nbsp;<\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">Upper-right to lower-left.&nbsp; In this usage, everything which crosses the rectangle gets selected:<\/FONT><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/P><P><IMG border=\"0\" alt=\"Untitled-1.png\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/autodesk.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/90540i20E4B2F6CCFCB9D7\/image-size\/original?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" title=\"Untitled-1.png\" \/>&nbsp;<IMG border=\"0\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.33.45 AM.png\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/autodesk.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/90544iA7764E189A54E18A\/image-size\/original?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" title=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.33.45 AM.png\" \/><\/P><P>&nbsp;<\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">Notice how much more was selected this way.&nbsp; The yellow rectangle is a visual clue that you are doing a \u201ccrossing\u201d selection, instead of the orange \u201cinclusion\u201d selection preview.<\/FONT><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/P><P><STRONG><FONT size=\"3\">Freeform Selection<\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">If you have your area select set to \u201cFreeform Selection\u201d, you can draw a less constrained shape to determine what is selected, instead of a rectangle.<\/FONT><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">Freeform Selection also has crossing and inclusion selection options.&nbsp; Drawing your shape clockwise is an inclusion selection:<\/FONT><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/P><P><IMG border=\"0\" alt=\"untitled2.png\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/autodesk.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/90546i5FD7985359BAA05E\/image-size\/original?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" title=\"untitled2.png\" \/>&nbsp;<IMG border=\"0\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.40.16 AM.png\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/autodesk.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/90548iD79F9BCE43D81DAC\/image-size\/original?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" title=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.40.16 AM.png\" \/><\/P><P>&nbsp;<\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\"><SPAN>While counter-clockwise is a crossing selection:<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\"><SPAN>&nbsp;<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/P><P><SPAN><IMG border=\"0\" alt=\"untitled3.png\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/autodesk.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/90550i02E1ECA63A3B0135\/image-size\/original?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" title=\"untitled3.png\" \/>&nbsp;<IMG border=\"0\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.43.25 AM.png\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/autodesk.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/90552iF62BFB301282F4B4\/image-size\/original?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" title=\"Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 11.43.25 AM.png\" \/><\/SPAN><\/P><P>&nbsp;<\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\"><STRONG>Paint Selection<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/P><P><FONT size=\"3\">This kind of area selection allows you to select just by dragging the cursor over things you want to select.&nbsp;Paint Selection, by its nature, is always a \u201ccrossing\u201d selection \u2013 anything the path of the cursor selects will be selected.&nbsp;
