And we\u2019re constantly pouring more transistors into our computers, looking for ways to make things better, faster, and stronger than ever. But then we turn our attention to something like transportation, and well, that story just isn\u2019t changing much at all, now is it? We\u2019ve still got cars that crawl along roadways in our traffic-congested commutes. We\u2019ve still got trains that snake slowly along our landscapes. Or airplanes that feel like the seats are getting smaller and more constricted as the years draw on. This all makes you wonder, for how obsessed we are with improvement and evolution in consumer technology, why hasn\u2019t our development in transportation kept pace? This is the question that the Hyperloop is trying to answer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"still-stuck-in-the-past\">Still Stuck In the Past<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re all familiar with today\u2019s methods of transportation, whether that\u2019s on the road, water, air, or by railway. All of these methods have three things in common &#8211; they\u2019re expensive to maintain, not as fast as we\u2019d like them to be, and they pump out some unpleasant stuff into our environment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s society to do when their primary method of getting around in this world comes with a lot of baggage? It\u2019s time to put inject some innovation into our ways of moving. This is where the Hyperloop concept comes in. In a nutshell, it\u2019s an idea for a high-speed transport system created by the one and only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/elon-musk-20837159\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elon Musk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can travel over 700 mph. The only transportation system that comes close to matching that speed is the Maglev train in Asia that only goes 347 mph. We\u2019ve got some catching up to do.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large size-full wp-image-1392\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/eagle\/2017\/07\/800px-A_maglev_train_coming_out_Pudong_International_Airport_Shanghai.jpg\" alt=\"maglev_train\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The Maglev train in Shanghai will have some serious competition when the Hyperloop is born. After all, we get around just fine as we do. That evening commute is just a fact of life, and we all consider air travel to be the holy grail of human mobility. But engineering is all about making things better, and that\u2019s what Musk wants to do.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept for the Hyperloop came about when Elon Musk learned about the proposed development of the California High-Speed Rail System. Needless to say, Musk wasn\u2019t impressed at the proposed \u201cbullet\u201d train that was going to be one of the most expensive and slowest moving trains in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Musk\u2019s opinion, if you were going to invest billions into building a new transportation system, then it should probably have equally massive gains in safety, efficiency, convenience, and sustainability. But instead, what Musk saw was a state that was willing to throw tens of billions of dollars down on a system that wasn\u2019t any faster, and wasn\u2019t any more efficient to create. And so his idea was born for the Hyperloop. This concept presents some interesting benefits for our perceptions of transportation, including:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Improving Efficiency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Take something like an airplane, and you spend most of your fuel and dollars getting to an altitude that you can cruise efficiently. With the Hyperloop, you\u2019ll only need propulsion to get moving in the first 5% of your journey, and the rest is all about riding that momentum. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Connecting People<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Imagine being able to live in Los Angeles and work in San Francisco. No, we\u2019re not talking about working from home here. You\u2019d be able to get from one spot to the other in as little as 30 minutes. How will this kind of high-speed transportation change the way that we do business and connect with our friends and family? <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Transporting Sustainably<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nearly every one of our transportation methods involve some kind of output that has a negative effect on the environment. So what happens when you ditch the fossil fuels, and embrace a transportation system that can be powered fully by solar &nbsp;and a propulsion system that works through magnetism and air pressure? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mind of Elon Musk, the Hyperloop will become the fifth mode of transportation next to airplanes, trains, automobiles, and ships. It\u2019s going to be a whole new class of mobility on its own. All for only $6 billion. Are you taking note, California?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large size-full wp-image-1393\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/eagle\/2017\/07\/musk-uwm.jpg\" alt=\"elon-Musk-hyperloop\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Tens of billions you say? (<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyplanet.climate-kic.org\/european-teams-win-elon-musks-hyperloop-competition-in-california\/\">Image source<\/a>)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-the-hyperloop-will-come-to-be\">How the Hyperloop Will Come to Be<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elon Musk has an interesting way to describe how his Hyperloop concept will work, describing it as a kind of \u201ccross between a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumofflight.org\/aircraft\/concorde\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concorde<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a railgun, and an air hockey table.\u201d How will this happen? At the core of the Hyperloop are three primary scientific principles at work:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Magnetism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By magnetically suspending a pod with passengers inside a tube, you can have a moving transportation system that doesn\u2019t have to be held back by the typical restrictions of friction found when the rubber meets the road. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Air Pressure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The air pressure within the Hyperloop tube will also be at its minimum, which will also help to reduce friction and increase the speed of travel of the pod as it cruises from city to city. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Inertia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By keeping a mostly straight-pathed journey across flat terrain, you\u2019ll be able to ensure the highest degree of momentum without any sharp turns that would slow down speed and efficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you break all of these scientific principles down, the real aim is this &#8211; to create a transportation system that has the least amount of friction as possible. Because when you put rubber on the road, or run metal on a set of rail tracks, or try to ascend and descend a metal can through the air, you\u2019re always fighting against the elements to pick up the speed you need.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the heart of this frictionless system in the Hyperloop is the Pod, which will initially house passengers, and maybe even cars in the future. By placing a pod inside a tube, you can create an environment that\u2019s very similar to how an aircraft travels at high altitudes. The less air pressure present, the less friction applied, and the faster you can travel. This entire Hyperloop system was broken down into several components by Musk, allowing it to travel at 700+mph with the help of:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"linear-induction-motors\">Linear Induction Motors<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These motors will get their power through the magic of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/eagle\/blog\/inductor-plain-english\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">induction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the simple inductors that you use in your electronic designs! By placing inductors at set intervals along the track of the Hyperloop tube, the pod will be able to keep its motors charged at a fast and efficient pace. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"magnets\">Magnets<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>We all know that induction is amplified when you add a core to the inductive material. The Hyperloop pod will have a set of magnetic \u201cskis\u201d on its side to act as the inductive core, to<span style=\"background-color: #f5f6f5;\"> take advantage of this fundamental electromagnetic principle<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"solar-panels\">Solar Panels<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musk proposes that this entire Hyperloop operation can be powered simply through the placement of solar panels on the roof of the Hyperloop transport tube, that\u2019s it. No fossil fuels required, and you can store all of the generated energy in a series of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/hackaday.com\/2017\/02\/28\/tesla-model-s-battery-pack-teardown\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tesla battery packs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large size-full wp-image-1394\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/eagle\/2017\/07\/Hyperloop-RZD_en1-hyperloop-only-teleportation-is-faster_03.jpg\" alt=\"hyperloop-solar-panels\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Put some solar panels on the Hyperloop tube, and you\u2019ve got yourself a fully powered system. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.railwaypro.com\/wp\/russia-plans-its-own-hyperloop-high-speed-project\/\">Image source<\/a>)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t caught on by now, all of these ideas presented by Musk are some heavy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concepts <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backed by lots of engineering concepts. And like any good idea, there\u2019s a bunch of holes that need to be filled in to make this a reality. Here are just a few of the problems that are needing to be addressed:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"path-of-travel\">Path of Travel<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achieving the high theoretical speeds of the Hyperloop will require a path of travel that doesn&#8217;t include drastic turns or changes in elevation. Because of this, the Hyperloop will need to be built on flat terrain with a straight path of travel. But how is this going to work in places with more rugged and varied terrain? Musk has it figured out for California, just build a Hyperloop tunnel in line with the 5 freeway, it\u2019s already flat and straight enough.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pressure-buildup\">Pressure Buildup<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the tight spacing between the Hyperloop tube and pod, there\u2019s going to be a ton of air building up that needs to go somewhere. The pod could push all of this air forward, but that will just slow the whole system down. So how do you go about ensuring the safety of passengers hurtling along at 700 mph when the slightest bump or jolt can send the entire operation into chaos? Musk proposes to mount the Hyperloop tube on a series of pylons placed every 100 feet. This will allow for slips from earthquakes without impacting the pods and tubes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large size-full wp-image-1396\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/eagle\/2017\/07\/340E3B9E00000578-3585662-image-a-65_1463000569450.jpg\" alt=\"hyperloop-pylons\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Placing pylons every 100 feet might help to protect against the dangers of earthquakes. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/news\/nation-now\/welcome-to-the-age-of-hyperloop\/186978296\">Image source<\/a>)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"crowdsourcing-the-solution\">Crowdsourcing the Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elon Musk is a busy guy with trying to build the world\u2019s next energy empire or making space travel more cost efficient with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacex.com\/reusability-key-making-human-life-multi-planetary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reusable rockets over at SpaceX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you think he has the time to overturn yet another stagnant industry, then think again. Instead of building the Hyperloop himself, Musk has taken on a new approach, providing his idea as open source technology for others to improve.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far the results have been amazing. On January 30, 2016, SpaceX hosted a Hyperloop design competition where more than 100 prototype pod designs were submitted. The winner was a team of grad students from MIT, who designed a pod that was light, focused on speed and safety, and included a fail-safe brake system. They also used a pair of neodymium magnets to levitate their pod, whereas most other prototypes used an air jet system.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large size-full wp-image-1397\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/eagle\/2017\/07\/mit-set-for-spacex-hyperloop-pod-competition.png\" alt=\"mit-hyperloop-pod\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Here we have the winning Hyperloop design from MIT grad students. The winner this time wasn\u2019t MIT, but a team from Delft University in the Netherlands. What\u2019s next on the horizon for Hyperloop competitions? <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacex.com\/hyperloop\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year from August 25-27<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contestants will be meeting yet again to see which pod will be able to achieve the highest maximum speed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these contests are a great way to move the Hyperloop concept forward, at the end of the day, it\u2019s all comes down to money. Are businesses interested in investing in the vision that Hyperloop is presenting for the future? You bet, and there are a few groups at play that are working to make this happen:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hyperloop-transportation-technologies-htt\">Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT)<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is yet another crowdsourced engineering project, filled with engineers and scientists all working on a Hyperloop pod in their free time. HTT has engineers from all over the place, including companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and NASA. Every person that gets involved with HTT is offered stock options as an incentive to participate in the group\u2019s success.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For testing grounds, HTT is looking to build a five-mile track in Quay Valley, an environmental community that runs fully on renewable and sustainable technologies. Pishevar also happens to be friends with Elon Musk. HT also has Brogan BamBrogan on board to lead the engineering side of the project. This is the guy responsible for designing the Falcon 1 rocket and the Dragon spacecraft at SpaceX. Needless to say, this group has some serious intellectual and financial muscle.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For testing rounds, HT has already built their first test facility at the Apex Industry Park in Las Vegas, Nevada. (<a href=\"https:\/\/hyperloop-one.com\/blog\/hyperloop-ones-vision-america\">Image source<\/a>)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rloop-reddit\">rLoop (Reddit)<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side of the spectrum, we\u2019ve got another crowd-sourced team, this one finding its home on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/rLoop\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reddit at rLoop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This group is a dedicated team of professionals and students that have come together from all around the world to design a Hyperloop pod. In January 2016 rLoop won a prize for the best non-student team at the first SpaceX Hyperloop competition. And they\u2019re also on their way towards competing in the second Hyperloop competition for the fastest maximum speed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can these underdogs that have collected together on Reddit to share their passion for the future of transportation come out above the rest? People are already thinking big here. HT revealed in April 2017 their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hyperloop-one.com\/blog\/hyperloop-ones-vision-america\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision for America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which proposed a series of Hyperloop tracks that would be built across the United States. And in March 2016, HTT announced its plans to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2017\/01\/slovakias-hyperloop-moves-step-closer-not-joke\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build a network of Hyperloop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tracks to connect Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and Slovakia together.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hope that all of the projects involved in changing our future of transportation will meet with success. After all, we\u2019re all in this together, working to bring the incredible progress of innovation to an aspect of the human experience that has largely remained unchanged since the introduction of the airplane.
