{"id":1472,"date":"2016-04-06T06:01:45","date_gmt":"2016-04-06T13:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/?p=1472"},"modified":"2016-06-13T09:31:56","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T16:31:56","slug":"break-the-internet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/break-the-internet\/","title":{"rendered":"How I Broke the Internet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kim Kardashian and I have at least one thing in common, the pictures we post break the internet.\u00a0 Let\u2019s take a step back and start from the beginning.\u00a0 Last week I posted an image on LinkedIn making the bold statement that I created the images below after approximately 13 minutes of design work in Fusion 360.\u00a0 In this\u00a0same amount of time that I\u00a0would have\u00a0most likely\u00a0still been setting up my sketches and workplanes if I was using a traditional parametric modeler. \u00a0This led to some&#8230;spirited comments &#8211; both positive, negative, true and false.\u00a0 Let\u2019s set the record straight my friends, I am not the first person to design or model a chair in 3D.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to believe, I know. \u00a0Solid modeling, parametric surfacing, sub-divisional modeling and direct modeling were all on the table, and ultimately, can all give you an answer to the problem.\u00a0 The key takeaway however, was that the overall experience, speed, and freedom of being able to design inside Fusion 360\u00a0using the T-spline tools blew me away and left the &#8220;<em>theoretical<\/em> me&#8221; still trying to build it using parametric workflows (in any tool including Fusion 360) in the dust. \u00a0TMZ has been denied for comment on how I created said design, this is my exclusive tell-all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I learned in some simple equations:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Parametric Surface Modeling + Time + User = Chair<\/p>\n<p>T-spline Modeling + (Time \/ x) + User = Chair<\/p>\n<p>Or<\/p>\n<p>T-spline Modeling + Time + User = xChairs<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I jokingly added that #itsscience, but it obviously is not, it&#8217;s mathematics!\u00a0 In all seriousness, I, like the many people that cheered or jeered me, have been\u00a0in this industry long enough to know that a parametric modeler can do it.\u00a0 I certainly could have used any one of those workflows in Fusion 360&#8217;s\u00a0unified modeling environment to create a chair, but the point was not that parametric modeling is inferior, or bad, it was that in the time it would take me to lay out my work planes, create guide sketches, etc., I was able (in 13 minutes) to create a really exciting shape that communicated my idea!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1475\" src=\"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Break-the-internet-1-e1459869634834.png\" alt=\"Chairs in Fusion\" width=\"700\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Break-the-internet-1-e1459869634834.png 700w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Break-the-internet-1-e1459869634834-300x130.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">-13 minutes of work in Fusion 360-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, as my equations suggest, you could stop here, create a drawing, create a tool path, or a simulation or you could take advantage of the freedom of using Fusion 360\u00a0and iterate on that design.\u00a0 What if we added an open back rest?\u00a0 What would it look like in plastic?\u00a0 Hard edges?\u00a0 Can I make these stackable? (The next statement is not intended to insight a riot and please don\u2019t serve me papers for slander.)\u00a0 Using parametric surface modeling in this example would have limited my outcome\u00a0either because of\u00a0the time it would take to create or that I wouldn\u2019t have arrived at the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, 5<sup>th<\/sup>, or 20<sup>th<\/sup> \u00a0iteration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the immortal words of Abraham Lincoln, \u201cdon\u2019t hate the player, hate the game\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I was being a little bit facetious, I\u2019ll admit it.\u00a0 After all, I am not that slow of a parametric modeler.\u00a0 The point I was trying to make still stands.\u00a0 The Fusion 360\u00a0mantra is \u201cDesign Differently,\u201d and this is a perfect example of what we mean.\u00a0 Not only am I able to use the right tool (T-splines) but I can design with complete freedom\u00a0using the\u00a0right tool (solid, surface, direct, freeform) because Fusion 360 is not an awesome freeform modeler, it is not a parametric modeler, it is all of those thing in one product development platform!\u00a0 In general I love the spirit of the design community, the problem solvers, the passionate engineers and designers.\u00a0 Not to mention, I did get a standing offer from a Solidworks user to get some training if I am ever in Australia, since I inferred that it would take a lot longer in SWX\u2026that made me smile!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1478\" src=\"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chair-in-Fusin-2-e1459869614971.jpg\" alt=\"Chair in Fusion 2\" width=\"700\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chair-in-Fusin-2-e1459869614971.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chair-in-Fusin-2-e1459869614971-300x131.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallery.autodesk.com\/fusion360\/projects\/chair-26\">https:\/\/gallery.autodesk.com\/fusion360\/projects\/chair-26<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interested in learning how to use the sculpt tools in Fusion 360? \u00a0Join our Deep Dive into Sculpting session at 1 pm EDT on Friday!\u00a0 Register here: https:\/\/attendee.gotowebinar.com\/register\/4194332668509693443.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Until next time&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Jamie<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jamie_Scherer\">@Jamie_Scherer<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With just thirteen minutes of sculpting in Fusion 360, I created this chair model.
