We are excited to open the EIP technology to the public on an opt-in basis. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The software being enabled is ready for public use but is missing specific features to call complete. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><strong>Joint creation is disabled while in EIP<\/strong> &#8211; See the Component Positioning section below for more details.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>EIP Benefits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Streamline Workflows<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Reduce or eliminate the need to open an XREF in its own tab to make edits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In-Context Editing<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Editing from within a larger assembly provides a better context and understanding of related and surrounding components.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assembly Associations<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Enables associative referencing of assembly geometry from within the XREF via Derived Assembly Contexts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>What is Edit in Place?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12754 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/EIP-Browser-Icon-300x158.png\" alt=\"Edit in Place icons shown when hovering an XREF in the browser.\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/EIP-Browser-Icon-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/EIP-Browser-Icon.png 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Edit in Place is the ability to access and make changes to an externally referenced file (xref) from within the context of a parent design. Edit in Place is not intended to completely remove the need to open an xref in its own window while designing, but instead reduces the need to jump between design tabs to edit features in each xrefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edit in Place also enables associative connections between an assembly and an xref. These connections, called Assembly Contexts, allow part of the assembly to be derived into the external files, so the external file can be developed independently from the main assembly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Updates at the assembly level can be pulled into the xref by synchronizing the assembly context. When the assembly context is synchronized features referencing the context will be updated accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Non-associative Edit In Place (Complete)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-associative EIP is any edit or feature that does not create references outside the component being edited.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the video below an XREF is activated for Edit in Place. Next, a local component in the xref is activated, a hole and fillets are created, and a sketch dimension is updated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Edit in Place is finished and focus returns to the assembly, the changes are consumed and the assembly is updated to reflect the changes made to the XREF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1728px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-12521-1\" width=\"1728\" height=\"1080\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Local-EIP.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Local-EIP.mp4\">https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Local-EIP.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The changes seen in the video are made only within the local component and don\u2019t reference assembly geometry or positions in any way. In this case, no context is created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This workflow is the equivalent of opening the Saddle Assembly in its own tab, making the same changes, saving, closing, returning to the assembly and refreshing to pull the changes into the assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Assembly Contexts (Complete*)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(*Assembly contexts are complete, but will experience minor workflow adjustments to accommodate completion of the feature set.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edit in Place also enables the ability to reference assembly-level components and their position while creating features in the external files. When references are made between a parent assembly and an xref an Assembly Context is created.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12756 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Assembly-Context-Timeline-Marker.png\" alt=\"Image showing the assembly context icon in the parent design timeline.\" width=\"203\" height=\"47\" \/>An Assembly Context consists of two items; a context marker in the assembly timeline to identify the moment the references were created and an Assembly Contexts folder in the browser of the xref. All geometry and positions referenced are derived into the\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assembly context folder in the XREF.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12757 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Assembly-Context-Browser.png\" alt=\"Image showing Fusion browser expanded to expose the assembly context folder nested in the external reference file.\" width=\"261\" height=\"204\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the XREF is opened on its own each assembly context and the geometry referenced are available for use in the XREF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the context is activated components are repositioned to reflect their assembly-level positions and can be reference by design features in the XREF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the video below, the position of the motor in the assembly will control the position of the holes in the external plate through an assembly context. If the EIP pencil icon is missing from an xref in the browser this is likely the reason.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Component positioning in EIP (Incomplete &#8211; Joints disabled in EIP)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While editing an XREF, components can be created, but cannot be properly positioned because joints are currently disabled while active in EIP.
