What to Expect

Chances are you’re used to passing your PCB down the line to your mechanical engineer, but not in this class. Here you’ll design an audio amplifier PCB and solder all the components. Then you’ll learn how to create a form fitting mechanical enclosure in Fusion 360. This is the perfect opportunity to experience how the mechanical constraints of an enclosure affect the electronics that you design every day.
PCBs are more than just little green boxes, but when one of those components requires a redesign of your enclosure, then we feel your pain. In this session, you’ll learn how the constraints of your mechanical enclosure affect the design of a PCB because you’ll be designing both! Dive deep into the world of electronics and soldering to make a board that fits right the first time in your speaker enclosure.
You’re all about the look and feel of a product, but do you know what’s running under the hood to make all of that functionality possible? In this session, you’ll dive into the inner world of a beautifully designed product to create the electronic circuitry and enclosure. Then you’ll see it all come together in finished form with the help of a 3D printer, CNC machine, and laser cutter.

Session Schedule at a Glance
The Product Innovation Platform is a full-day session, starting at 8 am and ending around 9 pm. Here’s a rundown of what you’ll be doing the minute you walk in the door:
8 am – 9 am: Design Your PCB
You’ll begin by creating an audio amplification circuit in Autodesk EAGLE and then designing your printed circuit board (PCB) layout. This is a great opportunity for mechanical engineers and industrial designers to gain a new skill set in component placement and routing.
10:30 am – 11:45 am: Solder Your Components
You’ll then take your manufactured bare board and learn how to solder all of the components on. This will teach you how to electrically connect all of the parts to a circuit board and is a great skill to have for your future tinkering projects!
1 pm – 2 pm: Design Your Enclosure
After the AU Keynote and lunch, you’ll switch gears and become a mechanical engineer in Fusion 360. Here you’ll consider the constraints of designing a beautiful yet functional enclosure and speaker grill that will house your completed PCB design.
2:15 pm – 3:15 pm: Create Your Renderings and Documentation
With your enclosure and PCB complete, it’s now time to document all the work you did to ensure a successful manufacturing process. You’ll also learn how to create some snazzy 3D renderings to make your marketing team happy.
3:45 pm – 4:45 pm: Generate Your CAM Toolpaths
It’s time to see your design come to life! Here you’ll generate CAM toolpaths for the desktop 3D printers, CNC machines, and laser cutters that we’ll have on hand to manufacture your enclosure and speaker grill.
6 pm – 9 pm: Assemble the Design and Networking
You’ll then assemble the electrical and mechanical parts together for a completed portable speaker. You’ve worn a ton of different shoes during this session; now it’s time to unwind and let all of that new knowledge and skill building soak in. Enjoy drinks, explore all of the awesome exhibits at Autodesk University, and get your networking on!

Get your hands on a precision laser cutting machine from Universal Laser Systems. Here you’ll be using their digital laser processing machines to finely cut the front grill of your portable speaker.
