FirstBuild’s playbook for product innovation

Taylor Dawson

Product Design

Explore how technology is enabling product innovation by learning how FirstBuild breaks the traditional product development model.

GE subsidiary FirstBuild is a global co-creation community that brings together mechanical engineers and enthusiasts to rapidly design, build, and bring new consumer appliances to market. By relinquishing control and developing a new innovation playbook, FirstBuild has built an innovation engine that is producing new products at an unprecedented rate.

Whereas the traditional product development model is secretive and slow, FirstBuild’s playbook begins with co-creative design and moves straight to building a small batch of sellable product for validation purposes. By closing the loop from mind to market, they’re able to quickly and effectively find out whether they should pivot, proceed, or abort. And by opening up the microfactory to anyone with a great product idea, they’re tapping directly into the consumer market to keep discovering and developing valuable new ideas.

Watch FirstBuild Product Evangelist Taylor Dawson’s talk to learn more about what this new paradigm means for mechanical engineers in our increasingly fast-changing market.
