The live Q&A session from the original broadcast of this webinar is detailed below.
Q: You talked about the value of the collection. Can you tell us what it costs? |
A: In US dollars, a subscription for AutoCAD is $1,690/year. A subscription for Inventor is $2,085/year. Add them up, that’s $3,775. The subscription for the collection is $2,720/year. You would save more than $1,000 by getting a collection subscription. Plus, you get CAM, advanced simulation, generative design, layout utilities, advanced rendering, and animation.
Q: I see that 2D is still alive and well within the collection? |
A: It is. AutoCAD has always been an important part of our day-to-day—we use 2D to start a project and/or to finish it (think of things like factory layout, 2D to 3D, Inventor part/assembly drawings, etc.). The more we develop a product, the more we need 3D.
Q: What do I do with my legacy data? |
A: There are a couple of solutions available:
1. You keep it as-is and use our AnyCAD technology when needed. AnyCAD allows you to read CAD files as-is. No need to convert them. This is particularly good in a multi-CAD environment.
2. Or - you convert it. Once the filter conversion is done, you end up with a solid body in Inventor. That solid body doesn’t have the features used to create its shape BUT with direct-editing, you don’t need it. Simply move a face, change a hole size/position, etc.
Q: Is it possible to open a model from another CAD system (such as Creo) as a fully editable model in Inventor? |
A: Yes. We can open a 3D model as-is with AnyCAD technology, or, simply convert it. When the file is converted, you can use the 'Direct Modeling' tools to push/pull/delete faces/features from your model.
Q: As built 3D scans are becoming mainstream for our company, we build our products based on the scans. How does 3D scanning fit into this workflow? |
A: ReCap is the solution included in the collection. When working with Point Clouds, usually our customers will either:
1) create a solid from the scan or
2) use the point cloud, clean it a little bit, and use that to "trace" on top of it.
Q: Is Autodesk planning to work more on the BIM converter aspect of Inventor? As a manufacturer, we have to generate Revit files for the customer. This is not an easy conversion. Can you sync the updates around that oval graphic you showed us, with say Creo? |
A: Yes, you could, absolutely. We tested it with "other CAD" using AnyCAD and the workflow was simple and fast.
