Perpetual licences

Updated: 1 July 2015

The changes we are making

Autodesk is gradually transitioning new software purchases of our products to subscription options only.

After 31 October 2015, perpetual licenses of the following Autodesk® AutoCAD LT® Family products will no longer be available for sale in selected Asia Pacific countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam):

  • Autodesk AutoCAD LT
  • Autodesk AutoCAD LT for Mac®
  • Autodesk Inventor LT™
  • Autodesk Revit LT™
  • Autodesk AutoCAD® Inventor LT™ Suite
  • Autodesk Revit LT™ Suite

Customers who purchased perpetual licenses, of Autodesk AutoCAD LT Family products before 31 October 2015, will be able to continue to use that license. Customers who have a perpetual license with Maintenance Subscription (US site) will receive software updates and corresponding benefits for as long as the subscription remains active. New seats of most individual software products, excluding Design and Creation Suites, will generally be available only as pay-as-you-go Desktop Subscription options globally after 31 January 2016.

Desktop Subscription is available as monthly, quarterly, one, two and three-year plans. We will continue to innovate and improve Desktop Subscription products so they more tightly integrate with Autodesk cloud services, and reduce file compatibility issues.

Our commitment to you

Throughout this period, Autodesk and our partners will work with customers to make this transition from perpetual licenses to Desktop Subscription as smooth as possible, and to deal with exceptional situations accordingly. We will provide as much advance notice as we can so that people can anticipate and plan for these changes. Please refer to the Questions & Answers section below for more detailed information. We will update this site as we progress through the transition.

If after reading the details below you still have questions, please visit our Perpetual License Changes Forum (US site) to ask questions or review answers we have given to other visitors.

Why we are making these changes

How we design and build the world is changing rapidly, which in turn is changing the tools we use and the ways companies and individuals buy and access software. Our customers have long asked for greater flexibility and more value from their software, and the shift to Desktop Subscription allows Autodesk to deliver both. With Desktop Subscription you get a simplified product management and deployment experience. Plus, it's easier to introduce new tools and more seats into a project with lower upfront cost and the ability to pay as you go.

We think that the smoothest transition for our customers in selected countries is to take a phased approach as we move to subscription-only software access. This approach is being implemented in Asia Pacific (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam).

Perpetual licenses of Autodesk AutoCAD LT Family products will no longer be available after 31 October 2015. New seats of most individual software products, excluding Design and Creation Suites, will generally be available only as pay-as-you-go Desktop Subscription options globally after 31 January 2016.

Q1. What is Desktop Subscription? Does Desktop Subscription use the cloud to store applications and data?

Desktop Subscription gives access to Autodesk software—the same full version as with a perpetual license—but with a flexible, pay-as-you-go approach for a software budget that’s easier to manage. Desktop Subscription provides benefits such as Basic Support, access to the latest software and product enhancements, and in some cases, access to select cloud services. The desktop software application delivered through Desktop Subscription as well as associated user data continue to be stored on a local machine, and any usage of Autodesk cloud services is optional.

Q2. What products are affected after 31 October 2015?

After 31 October 2015, perpetual licenses of the following Autodesk AutoCAD LT Family products will no longer be available for sale in selected Asia Pacific countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam):

  • Autodesk AutoCAD LT
  • Autodesk AutoCAD LT for Mac®
  • Autodesk Inventor LT™
  • Autodesk Revit LT™
  • Autodesk AutoCAD® Inventor LT™ Suite
  • Autodesk Revit LT™ Suite

Q3. Does this affect existing software purchased under a perpetual license?

No, if a customer already has a perpetual license or purchases a new perpetual license at any time through 31 October 2015, that license doesn't go away. They still retain the perpetual license to that software and can continue to use it in accordance with their perpetual license agreement. If the software product is covered by Maintenance Subscription, they will also continue to receive their Maintenance Subscription benefits.

Customers that need to add licences to an existing network server deployment will have the option to purchase additional network term licences as part of an upcoming “network subscription” option. Please review the Network Subscription FAQs (US site) for more information about the upcoming “network subscription” option.

Q4. How will this change impact Maintenance Subscription customers?

Customers with current Maintenance Subscription contracts on 31 October 2015, will retain the option to renew Maintenance Subscription for the affected products and receive corresponding benefits. The elimination of perpetual licenses only impacts the ability to make new purchases of new perpetual licenses.

Q5. How will Autodesk ease this transition for customers?

Autodesk is doing several things to make the transition to Desktop Subscription as smooth as possible for customers:

  • Providing the time needed to assess options and make plans by providing advance notice of changes to come
  • Allowing Maintenance Subscribers to continue to renew their Maintenance Subscriptions and receive/access the benefits of their Maintenance Subscription
  • Making Autodesk Account the one place to manage all of your products, subscriptions and services
  • Providing the ability to lock in your subscription rate by introducing the option of a multi-year Desktop Subscription offering
  • Continuing to offer Autodesk Design and Creation Suites as a perpetual license
