CAD MANAGER CENTER

Autodesk at the Center of the CAD Workflow: Advantages to CAD Managers & Teams

“It’s the defacto standard in the world. Autodesk products, one of the most important things we use. “— Frank Mayfield, CAD administrator at Leidos Engineering

One of the key advantages to having Autodesk products at the center of the CAD workflow is navigating better project execution.

Recently, a roundtable of experts convened at Autodesk headquarters in San Francisco, where they addressed challenges and opportunities, as well as their perspective on the changing landscape of CAD management and software.

These experienced CAD managers shared their experiences having Autodesk products at the center of their CAD work flows.

“It works…and it is almost intuitive,” Shaun Bryant, director at CADFMconsultants said. “I remember I went to a particular presentation where Carl Bass [Autodesk CEO] spoke about how Autodesk wants to move forward in a direction by which Autodesk is seen as the toolbox. You pick the appropriate Autodesk application out of that toolbox, do what you need to do, put it back in the toolbox. That was his definition of the Autodesk Suite. So, for example, you might have the building design suite that gives you products such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks…all those tools are there, you just use the appropriate one you need at the time.”

“The lovely thing about Revit is if you’ve got a flat 2D design of a floor of a building, you can take that strength to Revit and build that building from that flat 2D drawing,” Bryant continued. “The benefit of that is that it is interoperable, but more importantly, if you link that CAD model, any changes to that CAD model should show up the next time you open up Revit, as well. So, if somebody moves a wall in the CAD drawing you see that change in the Revit model—as long as you have that CAD file visible in the Revit model. So you can adjust your wall in Revit, too. All those little tools just save time. That’s the whole benefit of this workflow and process and collaboration with all the different products. It’s a time saver.”

R.K. McSwain, CAD manager at LJA Engineering, chipped in with how the products work together.

“The advantage of having Autodesk at center of our workflow from the point of collaboration is that you are generally going to be file compatible across those different products. Because Autodesk does a very good job of making sure that the files interact with each other, depending on which product you are using.”
