In part two of our series, we will delve into some of the specifics of the settings that allow you to customize your drafting environment and make life easier with your daily AutoCAD use. Let\u2019s explore each tab and look at some of the individual settings within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"files-tab\">Files Tab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Files tab lets AutoCAD know where all the resources are. This includes support files (e.g., .SHF,  .CUIX interface file, etc.). To do so, simply click the Add button, and browse to the path where you stored it. Note the corresponding numbers for each in the images throughout the article.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Show Tooltips <\/strong>\u2013 Definitely toggle this on, and also change the Extended tool tips value to a good value for you to see additional help on the tools in the Ribbon.<\/li><li><strong>Layout Elements<\/strong> \u2013 Toggle on the Display Layout and Model tabs, and Create viewport in new layouts tab to see the tabs for easy navigation and to automate a viewport being created when a new layout is created. <\/li><li><strong>Fade Control <\/strong>\u2013 This is where you control the fading intensity of references if you have this option on (I get this question asked a lot by users).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-4_aso0ai.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"910\" data-lbwps-height=\"753\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-4_aso0ai-300x248.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"910\" height=\"753\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-4_aso0ai.png\" alt=\"AutoCAD Display tab\" class=\"wp-image-9719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-4_aso0ai.png 910w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-4_aso0ai-300x248.png 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-4_aso0ai-768x635.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"open-and-save-tab\">Open and Save Tab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to note these toggles and settings in the Open and Save tab.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>File Safety Precautions<\/strong> \u2013 Toggle off Create backup copy with each save. In this day and age, we all have good backup systems, and there really is no reason to take up extra space on the server with thousands of .BAK files. Your IT person will thank you.<\/li><li><strong>File Open<\/strong>  \u2013  I like to see the path to my file. If you do too, toggle on Display full path in title.<\/li><li> <strong>Application Menu<\/strong> \u2013 When you go the Application menu, I like to see the full history of files that I have been in. This way my plot .PDF\u2019s don\u2019t get mixed up with all my other files in the standard Windows Documents folder.<\/li><li><strong>Background Processing Options<\/strong> \u2013 Most definitely turn off both these toggles. However, if you don\u2019t have the best system, you may adjust these settings to speed things up.<\/li><li>and 3. <strong>General Options<\/strong>\u2013 Sometimes you will need to reset the hidden messages you may have accidentally toggled to never display again.  This is where you turn them back on<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-7_xpz0hq-300x194.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9723\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-7_xpz0hq-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-7_xpz0hq-1024x662.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-7_xpz0hq-768x497.png 768w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-7_xpz0hq.png 1246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"user-preferences-tab\">User Preferences Tab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the important toggles and settings for the User Preferences tab. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Associate Dimensioning<\/strong> \u2013 We all want our dimensions to be associative. This toggle is a definite need to be turned on.<\/li><li>and 3. <strong>Default Scale List<\/strong> \u2013 I do civil engineering work, and the default scales that AutoCAD sets (architectural) for the default list do not work for me. Add and remove whatever scales you work with. This toggle turns them on.<\/li><li><strong>Crosshair Labels<\/strong> \u2013 I do civil engineering work, and the by default AutoCAD uses X, Y, Z. Well, in the civil engineering world, we deal in Northings (Y), and Eastings (X). This radio button enables me to see that.<\/li><li><strong>Display the ViewCube<\/strong> \u2013 In civil engineering, we almost never have a project that is straight up and down. Our projects can be at any arbitrary angle, but we still want to know which way is north. By default, the ViewCube is turned of in the 2D Wireframe visual style; the visual style that we all draft in. Toggle on the 2D Wireframe visual style to always see the ViewCube.<\/li><li><strong>Dynamic Input<\/strong> \u2013 When I do draft in 3D, and want to be able to see my Z value in dynamic input, I will sometimes toggle this on to show the z-field.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-10_vauyek.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"910\" data-lbwps-height=\"753\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-10_vauyek-300x248.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"910\" height=\"753\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-10_vauyek.png\" alt=\"3D modeling tab AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-9726\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-10_vauyek.png 910w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-10_vauyek-300x248.png 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/2-Options-10_vauyek-768x635.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"selection-tab\">Selection Tab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the toggles and settings you should know in the Selection tab. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Selection Modes <\/strong>\u2013 I have seen this a thousand times: A user goes to make a selection set, they drag the mouse, and AutoCAD all of a sudden starts to draw a blue or green selection window. That is the selection Lasso mode, and it can annoy many a user. Toggle off Allow press and drag for Lasso to disable this functionality.<\/li><li><strong>Object Limit for Properties Palette<\/strong> \u2013 Set this to the max so that your Properties palette will always show your selection set in it. The max is 32767. <\/li><li><strong>Object Selection Limit for Display of Grips<\/strong> \u2013 Set this to the max so that you will always see a selection set easily with grips in the drawing window.
