The final frontier. When you think about it, those sci-fi captains and commanders had it easy. They only had one space to explore. We AutoCAD users have it twice as difficult. We have two spaces to keep track of: Model and Paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, we know objects can\u2019t exist in both at the same time. But just as those sci-fi guys are always looking for a hypothetical wormhole to another space, we actually have one. It\u2019s called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Change Space (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2020\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Core\/files\/GUID-343F7917-6CED-4823-8E38-90895FF740EB-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\">Change Space<\/a>. Plus, it\u2019s not found on the other side of the cosmos, it\u2019s just hidden in the additional tools portion of the Modify panel in the Ribbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>What does it do? It\u2019s simple. It moves objects between model space and paper space (and vice versa).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/CHSPACE_1_ptzlve.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"655\" data-lbwps-height=\"389\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/CHSPACE_1_ptzlve-300x178.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"655\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/CHSPACE_1_ptzlve.jpg\" alt=\"Change Space in AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-9632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/CHSPACE_1_ptzlve.jpg 655w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/CHSPACE_1_ptzlve-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our example probably happens more than we\u2019d like to admit. Someone (because it\u2019s always someone else, right?) is working in a Layout, and inadvertently puts something in the wrong space. Let\u2019s say the below view callout is supposed to be in Paper Space but it got inserted into Model Space instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Enter our hero, CHSPACE. There\u2019s no fancy interface or wizards\u2026 like any good crew member, it just does its work with little fanfare. Issue the command, select the objects from the activated Viewport (Model Space \u2013 make sure to watch the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"UCS icon (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2020\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Core\/files\/GUID-E658D5E7-EE5C-4A06-BF34-F71CDB363A71-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\">UCS icon<\/a>), and just like that, they move through the wormhole into Paper Space. Everything looks the same\u2026 scale and location are perfect. It works just as well moving things from Paper Space to Model Space. Here is a representation of our example in reverse. You may want to consider the relatively unknown <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2019\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Core\/files\/GUID-02F517B0-441C-439A-9406-A251465E1992-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\">SPACESWITCH<\/a> system variable. Set it to 0 (zero) to prevent accessing Model Space by double-clicking in a layout viewport (you can still access model space with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"MSPACE (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/documentation\/ACD\/2013\/ENU\/files\/GUID-4FFCC0F6-ACA4-4C14-90BA-15A04E5ECA80-htm.html?st=MSPACE\" target=\"_blank\">MSPACE<\/a> command).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-final-destination\">The Final Destination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I used the examples of objects being placed into the wrong space, but of course, it doesn\u2019t just work on mistakes. Whatever your reason, don\u2019t go to the overhead of scaling and positioning objects that you need to move from one space to the other.
